‘Numbers stations’ have fascinated me since I was a kid. They are broadcast on short wave and consist of calling signs followed by synthesised voices in random languages reciting numbers, or incomprehensible morse code. It’s widely assumed that they are used to transmit messages to spies in the field. The crackle of shortwave radio combined with the eeriness of the broadcasts create an irresistible, addictive, atmosphere. As wonderful as the shipping forecast may be, it has nothing on them…check out ‘Gong Station’ (sampled as the intro, and used as the melody motif), ‘Swedish Rhapsody (the outro)’, and ‘Lincolnshire Poacher’…As good as it gets.

After our first collaboration - https://soundcloud.com/markjbennett/set-me-down-that-road-rplanesmjbennett - Rodolfo offered me a challenge in the form of a decades old song (in a folk/pop style, complete with tape hiss) that he was updating with a platform that is closer to R&B and my task was to come up with a new lyric. This original break-up song had an air of a happy ending to it, though initially I chose to write something less optimistic… however it became clear that with the new arrangement my words had to match the original mood. The added bonus to this is that I now have another break-up song lyric available for the future.
Singing a song that had already existed in another form meant that I had to find a very personal interpretation in order to make it truly mine. A huge thanks to Rodolfo for sharing his inspiring music with me.
