This is Duck Trash’s set from Tomorrow’s Fires, a party celebrating the release of Erika’s “Anevite Void” album on February 25, 2023. Mix theme: After getting abducted by aliens, one must learn how to adapt & grow plants on an unfamiliar planet in outer space.

It’s hard to overstate the transformative power of the American Underground. Things get lost when it’s just a systematic big business, all these special things that make the core essence so powerful and palpable. IT first encountered @ducktrash when BMG played for them in Indianapolis last September with Noncompliant at this exquisite dive bar called State Street Club with the most open minded crowd. It wasn’t what it looked like, it really transcended time and space. “Duck Trash is a queer techno & electro selector who believes in the healing power of the dance floor.” We couldn’t agree more, and we’re so glad they got to do their Detroit debut at Erika’s album release party. They are part of the fabric that makes the midwest so amazing, the true underground freaks.

Inbound 12/26 - Duck Trash

Three years ago, on May 1st 2017, we posted the first episode of the Abstract without Abstraction Mix Series. This year, as celebrations of all sorts (Beltaine, Ramadan, International Workers Day, &c.) are colored by the profligate factors and vectors of a contagion that is, in many ways, irreversibly altering the fabric of what it means to be social beings in our telematic worlds, we are too celebrating both an anniversary and a letting go. 

With this profoundly beautiful ambient offering from Chicago’s Ethan Brown, we mark the beginning of the end of this series, at least in its current form. Certainly we know that there may be a coda or a reprise- one or two more mixes in store, perhaps- but the inertia of the path has told us that it is giving way to its entropy.

Without anymore purple prose, in the words of Ethan,  

“I am thrilled to present you this mix, which was recorded at WNUR’s radio studio live on air for my show, Inbound, in Evanston, Illinois. It was recorded in early 2020, and although that feels like an eternity ago now, the sounds still feel relevant and immediate to what we’re all going through. Finally, this was my submission mix for Gays Hate Techno Campout, which has been canceled. Gays Hate Techno has been one of our community’s special little oases , and it’s beyond heartbreaking to see it go because of Covid19. This mix has all the loving energy I was hoping to bring to my performance there.  It is doubly special to share this mix on Isaac’s platform, as they were also planning on attending and performing at GHT this year. I hope this mix brings you a little bit of joy and warmth, and serves as a reminder that things will get better.”

This mix is a love letter to someone special to me <3 I aimed to convey the range of feelings they give me, illustrated from the lightest gentlest floaty melodies to the heaviest saddest rawest kick tones. Hopefully this mix can allow any listener to rewatch moments from their own love lives as if it were playing like a beautiful scene in a movie. <3
