The Piano Cloud group issued a challenge to compose and record music using  four chords Gm, Dm, Eb and F.
The response to the call out was quite staggering, with 40 tracks submitted. The range of creativity was also a fantastic cross section of TPC's ever growing new and experienced members worldwide.

Aaron Martin & Christoph Berg’s split called “Day Has Ended” is a piece of quiet, intimate music, interfused with daylight and covered by a soft mist of evening dreams. This album spans the course of a day until the point where night falls.

The first part, created by Aaron Martin, is a water-colour, cool and delicate. The twinkling sun reflected itself in a slow river, transparent silvery clouds sparkle and brush the heads of drowsy trees. The closer to the middle of the album, the lower goes the gentle shadow, saturating. In the second part - Christoph Berg’s one, water-colour turns into gouache. The sound becomes more full, more sensuous, it comes in waves, like breath of a sleeping man.

Just close your eyes, be all ears and you’ll feel – the night is not silent. Sweet tune of twilight and darkness full of echo, humming blue, vague voice of the strings and clear gleaming of bright stars in a velvet sky – that is the night.

It’s a perfect and severely sincere work, slightly bittered with melancholy.

Aaron Martin is a very talented multi-instrumentalist from Topeka, Kansas who has releases on such labels as Experimedia, Preservation, Under The Spire, Sonic Meditations.

Christoph Berg is composer and sound artist currently living and working in Berlin focusing on fragile acoustic chamber music compositions. Also writes electro-acoustic music as Field Rotation. He has releases on Facture, hibernate, Denovali Records, Fluid Audio.

This is my contribution to the "Four Chord Challenge" by "The Piano Cloud". "Back by popular demand, this four chord challenge asks Piano Cloud members to compose a new piece of music using only the chords G minor, D minor, Eb major and F major (in that order)." So - I did ... With my work I express my feelings about fears and hopes relating to actual family affairs. 

Anxious Heart

Through signs that never arrive and streetlights that refuse to shine, light makes its way through broken streets and fading echoes. Veins of neon pulse in the shadows, fragile but enduring, while the mechanisms of silence turn ceaselessly. In this fragile geometry, illumination emerges not as brilliance, but as presence, gently carried, born of a silent persistence.

Dreams That Collapse

It’s been a grim year. I won’t add to the countless column inches exploring why; suffice to say I’ve spent a great deal of it feeling like humanity is on the edge of oblivion, and wondering if, all things considered, that might not be such a bad thing. At other times I’ve clung to what Obama described as ‘the audacity of hope’ – the idea that we may one day learn to live with love, that future generations may finally step out of the shadow of fear that divided and conquered their ancestors.

I wrote this track the night before last, then got up at 5am to record the guitar before engines started roaring in the bus garage outside my flat. You can hear a few birds singing at the end, but that seemed appropriate, so I left it in. 

Thanks for listening in 2016. Here’s hoping.
