The title of this piece is a play on the Spanish word for hard liquor: aguardiente. The literal translation is water that burns. The piece is scored for sinfonietta and classical guitar soloist.

This movement is composed using two tone sets based on the random numbers in the decimal part of the number pi. The first set uses the 11th through 20th numbers in the decimal (8979323846) and the second set  the 61st through the 70th numbers (5923078164).

Each number has been assigned a note value in the combined keys of Bb major and Bb minor beginning with Bb and proceeding up the combined scales of both keys as follows:

1=Bb, 2=C, 3=Db, 4=D, 5=Eb, 6=F, 7=Gb, 8=G, 9=Ab, 0=A

Using this key, the two tone sets are:

Set 1: G Ab Gb Ab Db C Db G D F
Set 2: Eb Ab C Db A Gb G Bb F D

Frequency of note usage in the two sets:

1. Bb = once, 2. C = twice, 3. Db = three times, 4. D = twice, 5. Eb = once, 6. F = twice, 7. Gb = twice,
8. G = twice, 9. Ab = twice, 0. A = once.

Tonal tendencies:

Because one set ends with a D and F and the other with an F and D, and there are three Cs, there is a tendency to either a D minor or F major key.

Observations:

Experience in picking the pi number sets should lead to either a more consonant or dissonant composition. The two number sets chosen for this movement produce a fairly dissonant result. But the degree of consonance or dissonance can also be emphasized or lessened by using the compositional rules effectively.

Compositional rules:

A tone set can appear in its entirety in the melody, can be combined in the melody and the harmony (as long as the tone set notes appear in order or simultaneously and are all played before the tone set is reused*), can be split among different instruments, and/or can be played along with the other set(s).

*Fragments of the tone set can appear in an instrument or group of instruments without completing the set if the fragment is used to double an instrument or a group of instruments that completes the set. Consecutive notes in a tone set can be repeated as fragments to create rhythmic or melodic figures but all the remaining notes must be used before the tone set can be reused. However, one tone set can begin again in another instrument or grouping of instruments as long as both instruments or groupings complete the set they've begun before again beginning the notes in that or another set.
