Brittany’s fabled Frenchtek rave scene is subject to a long overdue retrospective, spanning 10 frazzled hardcore techno oddities produced by key players Yann Dub & Explore Toi plus pals, made in the ‘90s and into the ’00s - Massive RIYL La Peste, Nomex, Praxis!

The sound of choice for spangled refuseniks in north western France; Frenchcore is the hardcore techno subgenus notorious for soundtracking 100,000+ crowds at Teknivals - Europe’s answer to the UK’s free parties - as well as scuzzier, smaller raves in the region since the ‘90s. ‘Nation De La Boue’, or ‘Nation of Mud’, is among the first excavations for this pivotal era of contemporary French counterculture. Focussed on the work of two wayward players in the late, great Yann Dub and spar Explore Toi, their uncompromisingly weird and psychoactive rave music is held up as emblematic of French traditions of protestation and celebratory expression, and resonates heavily with Editions Gravats’ remit to highlight vital undercurrents of French music to the wider world.

Yann de Kéroullas, pseudonymously known as Yann Dub, was a french sound engineer, founder of Reverse-Primecut mastering studio, and leading proponent of frenchtek’s weirdest sounds. He passed away in 2013, but not before driving myriad minds to delirium with his experimental strains of speedcore for long over a decade via his Reverse Records label. Yann’s work accounts for about half of ‘Nation De La Boue’ - a worthy posthumous testament to his wayward style, characterised by its raw concrète-mechanical textures and the kind of pelting kick drums that drive K’d out ravers to trample puddles in the mud. His wickedly unyielding ‘Untitled’ is a case in point, while ‘Bruit Blanc’ shares a more psychoactive sound design with his peer, La Peste, and the radioactive abstraction ‘Brest sa plage son port industrial et sa base atomique’ channels the region’s mix of rugged beauty and industry into pure noise grot. But if you want the full frontal experience, we’d advise downing a bucket of cheap red wine and rail a line of K the size of your middle finger before submitting to the 10 minutes of his ‘Untitled (Bonus)’ for optimal frenchtek effect.

Explore Toi accounts for the other half of madness here. The wind-tunnel triplet coefficients of his ‘Kilos d’Huitres SVP Madame’ jam with Yann speaks to their shared, unhinged sidespin on hardcore techno, while the welting pulses of ‘Flamings Terminal’ gives a more personalised take on frenchtek standards, and the blasted 909 of his ‘Urban Groove’ follows a more psychedelic hunch to tonal paintings such as ‘Face Ambiance (Outro)’ and the monotonic structure of ‘Motherf#cker’s And Fatherf#cker’s (Bonus)’ that hail his background as a visual artist. 

’Nation De La Boue’ renders a definitive cross-section of France’s alternative rave scene, one effectively light years away from more popularised strains of French touch filter house and electro-rock that paralleled the years covered inside. It’s an intriguing snapshot of a largely undocumented scene and a vitally unhinged - and largely forgotten -  cog in the rave continuum.

After several extensive DIY world tours with his partner in pipes Enora Morice (from Wuhan to Baltimore via Ullapool ?!!), jester in chief Jazz Lambaux recently settled and channeled the material he recorded over the past few years into a manifest album for Éditions Gravats (some of which got released as singles via excellent Brussels-based label City Links and video clips directed by Jazz himself).

Almost 40 years after Baudrillard’s America, Jazz Lambaux offers his own fantasy of TV-fed - mostly white - third millennial suburban America. Music for Fools (2022-2024) is an elegy for a demographic with little-to-no property ownership prospects, entangled in a never ending culture war and a meaningless consumption race - a meager solace for a generation raised on Green Day’s American Idiot and Marilyn Manson’s Portrait Of An American Family.

Contrary to what its title suggests, Music For Fools (2022-2024) is not a mere compilation of tracks and skits lazily extracted from Jazz Lambaux’s hard drive to justify a touring habit. Like most of his fellow buffoons, the Mountain Dew-fueled Punchinello is smarter than he’s willing to pretend, and the narration his debut album offered is among the most uncompromising and cinematographic ones we’ve heard in the early 2020’s.

Punctuated by post-modern vignettes echoing Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Eminem’s own deranged comedy skits (special mention to the goofily Kafkaian “Broken Jukebox in B-Flat Major”), the album progresses towards a relatively radiant conclusion, conjuring the dizzying junk of US teenagealia it emerged from, touched by the grace of MTV-friendly gods. Ecstatic pop songs on steroids (“America”, “Yesterday”, “Paranoid”) - summoning the aforementioned acts - alternate with bittersweet ballads (“Twilight”, “Rockstar”), recalling the heydays of campus radios and Tori Amos’s mainstream avant-garde Boys For Pele. But all songs and instrumentals bath in that same hyperreal uncanniness, a grinning paranoid glow that blossomed in the mid-00’s through works like Gregg Araki’s Kaboom, Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly or Korn’s Twisted Transistor video clip… A trip through America’s guilt, led by a French cousin of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Autoreverse brings together Arnaud Rivière (prepared turntable - we should say damaged or destroyed), a kingpin of the French noise underground as a programmer at Instants Chavirés and Sonic Protest, team player with Otomo Yoshihide, Erik M, and a hundred others, ; and Nina Garcia (guitar & feedback), recently recruited by Stephen O'Malley's Ideologic Organ label after giving the whole of the Paris region a taste for noise guitar solos with her Mariachi project ("Guitar, pedal. That's all’, as his Discogs puts it. What he doesn't say is that it's EVERYTHING - a world, a cosmos in itself) – culminating in a self-titled album and instant classic (Mariachi, No Lagos, 2018), and various collaborations (Maria Bertel, Mamiedaragon). 

Their music, already been featured in two live cassettes, stems from assiduous concert practice. Autotunes is something like the duo's core in fission. They throw themselves into improvisation with little patience for detours : the position is clean-cut hardcore – less over-the-top clatter and more about finding the cutting edge, with an insistence on fine-tuning the limits of the instruments, attacking the raw and the gritty with maximum precision: the result is an irradiating flow of rare metals and certified toxins.

In one of the record's many climaxes, bleeps extruded from who knows where battle with the strumming of white-hot guitar strings. But there's a whole host of distinct techniques and sonorities at work here: seamless attacks, amplified scrap metal, just-caught feedbacks, provoked chances, melodies that invite themselves in but don't stay for dinner, rhythmic sketches and glimpsed zones of beauty, built-up and cracked materials, expected and unexpected counterpoints. The intensities vary from start to finish: howling, eruptive bursts of harsh noise microswitchs, shapeless feedback whining and growling, but also more meditative harmonics and resonances.

This is reinforced by the didactic and generous structure of the record, which first methodically exposes the takes played in the studio through ‘horizontal’ sequencing (A1), before repeating the same material ‘vertically’ in a meticulous work of hollowing out and elisions. Autotunes manifests a distinctive ability to maintain an astonishing dynamic in the depths of the post-industrial cavern left by Throbbing Gristle (‘Slug Bait’ period), Maurizio Bianchi and all. 

With Autoreverse, it's no longer time to marvel at our various abilities and tactics, but to tighten the mesh. In the way it coolly reviews the possibilities, in its peaceful radicalism, in its attitude of less noise, more impact, this record helps us to conceive what a comrade called once ‘an ethic of our violence’.
