How to remix an almost perfect song from Hopium? At first I stretched the track, because I did not want to change the dark black atmosphere. But when I listened to it a few times, it did not differ that much from the original. Then I decided to change the beat (not the tempo) to give it a more R&B feel and I added a deep synth that sounded a bit like the intro of 'Love don't live here anymore' by Rose Royce. My tribute to Nick Ashford who died on Monday. He is known for his compositions for Motown artists like Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross, together with his wife Valerie. As Ashford & Simpson they had several hits, like 'Found a cure' and 'Solid'. I reworked that last one, their biggest hit. Enjoy!


(Solid) As A Rock

This latest volume of my AOR On The Radio series is my medicine for a Saturday night hangover. Most of the tracks are either by ladies (they are definitely in a minority on AOR Disco) or about them. For example, 'Arianne' by The Neville Brothers was the song that gave me the inspiration for this mix. I don't quite understand his exact relationship to her (“she’s the smell of coffee brewing, on a quiet, rainy Sunday”), but this is one of the best love songs ever. The track is from their self-titled album that came out in 1978. It took courage to make a country soul album in the midst of the disco heyday. The original version of ‘Arianne’ is from soul singer Johnny Mathis. It appeared on his Killing Me Softly With Her Song album that was released in 1973). Rod McKuen, who recorded the song two years later, wrote on his official site that the song is a translated French poem. Picture: Ian Levine

The inspiration for this mix came partly from Poolside, two dj's who live in L.A. After watching their video 'Slow down' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xlun7VOJDmI). I wanted to go to California myself to enjoy the sunshine! When I saw them I knew that you don't have to be a heavy weight champion to enjoy the summer life... ;-)
