If I were asked to write a score for an extremely violent samurai movie this would be my sample treatment.   Image is a painting by Utagawa Kuniyoshi circa 1843.  Written in Finale using Kontakt 5 samples.  Just composed for the fun of it.

Drunken Foreigner Band plays an idiosyncratic electrified version of the Akha and Lam Lao musics of Thailand and Laos. As their name indicates in its provocatively self-deprecating way, the band could be viewed as yet another bunch of exotica-obsessed white males blindly pillaging a little known indigenous musical treasure. But far from being the work of post-colonial bandits, the band's passionate tribute is based on mostly vocal music learned from cassette tapes gathered by keyboardist Dave Kadden on trips to Southeast Asia. Comprising members of Sunwatchers, Invisible Circle and other experimental Brooklyn outfits, their debut LP will be available January 12th, 2018 on Electric Cowbell Records.

Intimacy (Karen's Song)

This work was created using a single sound: a sample of a violin playing one note.  In trying to achieve a certain amount of homogeneity, I manipulated only the sound’s pitch and duration.  In general, the work greatly depends on the use of imitation to provide the basic scaffolding and material of the piece.  The movements from pitch to pitch are somewhat governed by voice-leading applied on a microtonal level.  It was only through the use of technology that it became possible for me to work in such a precise way with these microtonal pitches.  But this work is neither an exercise in the use of technology or a construction based on some theoretical idea.  The small distances between pitches and the peculiar harmonic that result are used, like in all music, to project feelings of tension and release in a novel way.
