That out of tune digital marimba thing is bothering me here. On this come down I really want everything to feel nice and pleasant, and that thing sounds weird and out of tune and it's disregulating me when I really need soothing

I'd love that transition into the last song to be a really smooth one, it was a little messy. That said, given the whole journey, that wouldn't be throwing me off for more than a second and I love this track as an ending

Wow Ed, really great work and big improvement from the last set of yours I've listened to. Your 2-3 threshold was excellent, and your 4 section was wild and I loved it. Big win!! I'd love to hear you work on your first transition. I don't mean going back and re-doing the first transition from this set. I mean giving some special attention to which track is going to follow your first track and see if you can make that transition smooth. That can be a nice chance to set up the rest of your journey. Anyways, well done!!

The Third Date is a pivotal moment in a budding relationship. Not just the polite and guarded first encounter, or the reciprocation and light curiosity of the second. No, it is a threshold-crossing moment where the past and future meet.

The date goes like this: an agreement to set a time (So Let's Begin), the fluttering of the heart (Mercury-The Winged Messenger), the reappearance of unresolved threads of past relationships (Oh Devil), and then the sweeping up into rhythm and seduction, and the taste of a journey to somewhere new (Puerto Rico Me Llama). 

The thrust of attraction snaps the pair out of the prior 70s vacation fantasy (Love Like This), moving to yet more seduction (Saxo). The deepening intensity continues as the pair opens up (Love on the Line) and circles each other, facing the irresistible pull of each other’s gravity (The Chant). 

However it is only the third date, not a full-blown marriage, so there is a moment of levity (Disco Sandwich) which invites a moment of laughter and joy, before settling back into a more sincere and swirling expression of affection (You & Me and Tender Love). The date ends with a peaceful and connected expression (Blue), marking the increasing emotional safety the couple has arrived at.

A set imagined as an intimate low-light farewell to a friend embarking on an uncertain journey.

This mix was inspired by a reply Justine made to my post here (https://bodylvnguage.circle.so/c/heart-share-a712ae/i-ll-do-anything-except-that-one-thing) in which I was called to make an urgent journey with an unknown outcome and great discomfort. I focused on the 2-3 crossing moment. I have not had a great track record the last few mixes on this fertile period of the mix, and I wanted to take this opportunity to nail it. I think it’s the best mix I’ve made to date. Doing the 0rgasmic arc meditation before starting put me in a clear mindset, allowing me to unabashedly cut some of the tracks which I had previously added when something just felt off about them. 

The seduction element in this mix has a lot of “adventure” textures, designed to express the blend of excitement and anxiety in the lead up to a journey, as well as evoking foreign soundscapes. It is framed as a farewell for a friend embarking on such a journey, the well-wishes of their community behind them. As such, it is not conceived as a particular time and space, but I suppose it would most closely fit into an ecstatic dance format. 

I’ve incorporated some of the feedback from prior mixes, such as having fewer vocal tracks back to back to allow what is there to shine through. I also made a more direct line of building rather than jumping around as I had experimented with in the prior mix and tried not to fade out as much. I was emboldened to go deeper than usual in the 4/5 section, with a wild Lady Gaga remix at the peak. My track description includes “Danger!” because it really could go either way. 

I have played multiple ecstatic dances before, and think that this process is giving me more confidence to draw more out of people at the peak. I feel like my capacity to be in the presence of people’s discomfort and edge to be growing, because I am less afraid of this state.

PhDJ 3.0 >> Crossing the Threshold

This week I tried to experiment with moving the high and mid EQs around more. I think they can buy me a bit more time to overlap songs especially if they are clashing in some way. It wasn't a great outcome: some tracks were overly muffled and it doesn't replace finding the right mix in/mix out points. This set was more technically challenging given the range of textures and styles. I didn't nail a lot of the instrumental transitions, because my practice time was curtailed by preparing for a long performance set during the week. 

This is conceived as a mix to be played for members of my church community, spanning a wide age range and probably not that experienced in dance practices. It would take place on a Saturday afternoon in a light-filled church hall.

I feel as if I am on the right track for this format, and I am wondering how to calibrate the peak energy for what may be an older and possibly less physically nimble crowd.

Monday Night at Burning Man just after Sunset once again for the ever amazing Flaming Flamingos and The Illumination Village for the biggest poofer party on Playa. Once again it went boom.... went boom many times. Once again a totally unplanned journey playing to whatever was happening in front of me with visiting friends and art cars,  drone shows, fireworks and the constantly exploding propanes of the fire art all over the village created a very fluid dance floor and a very fun set.
