Free Fantasia on “O Zion, Haste” & “How Firm a Foundation”
from Gospel Preludes, Book 4

(b. 1938)

This is the last in a series of 12 Gospel Preludes by prominent University of Michigan composer William Bolcom. Book 4 was premiered by University of Michigan organist Marilyn Mason at a recital in Hill Auditorium at the University of Michigan during the 1986 National Convention of the American Guild of Organists. Bolcom writes: “The finale is a combined fantasy on O Zion, Haste and a gospel-influenced 5/4 setting of How Firm a Foundation, which caps the whole series.”

The stormy chromaticism of "Free Fantasia..." is a tour de force for both the performer and listener. Bolcom’s extensive experience with jazz music is clearly evident in the Gospel Preludes.

Bolcom received the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his "Twelve New Etudes for Piano" and his setting of William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience" won four Grammy Awards in 2005. He studied composition with, among others, Darius Milhaud and Olivier Messiaen in Paris.
