Edward Rushton studied at Chetham's School of Music, King's College, Cambridge, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the Zurich Conservatoire. His composition teachers included Robin Holloway and James MacMillan. He is based in Zurich and works as a freelance composer and pianist.

His works have been commissioned for and played by such groups as the London Sinfonietta, Schubert Ensemble of London, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Camerata Zürich, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Leeds Lieder+, Orchestra of the National Theatre Mannheim, London Symphony Orchestra, Counterpoise, The Harry White Trio, Zurich Opera, The Opera Group, State Opera of Hanover, State Opera of Kassel.

As an pianist specialising in song and chamber music, he has played many recitals in Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium and the UK with such musicians as Juliane Banse, Catriona Bühler, Katharina von Bülow, Sybille Diethelm, Annina Haug, Jeannine Hirzel, Theresa Kronthaler, Sophie Marilley, Yvonne Naef, Robin Adams, Richard Burkhard, William Coleman, Matthias Enderle, Christian Jott Jenny, Alexander Kionke, René Perler, Lázsló Polgár, Hieronymus Schädler, SImon Wallfisch, Harry White and Andreas Winkler.
