I had a lot of fun working towards this opening set for SYSTEM with guest artist @deraout. I had recently found @danheim_music via my friend Paul and was interested in exploring more music and soundscapes derived from a Baltic or Scandinavian origin. Through conversation with him and @iosisdrone, I was able to build from this inspiration. This lead to the formulation of the first hour of this mix. Dark archaic pagan ritualism intertwined with modern elements of dub techno and electronica. This slowly diverged into more upbeat left field techno before settling into a driving rhytym of melodic techno to set Deraout up with a good amount of momentum to carry into the night.

Recorded live at the SYSTEM warehouse in Minneapolis.

Opening DJ Set at SYSTEM

Hyperactive returns to Northern Parallels with a track that chugs and snaps through the darkness. Acid pads reverberate tumble over a swinging and unrelenting kick. Growing layers of rhythmic accents dodge in and out while the synth grows busier and more frantic.

Gabriella Vergilov's Natural Remix breaths fiery soul into the beating heart. A bare melody set this track apart from the previous instrumental pieces. The melody is provided by undulating synth lines that hover over a doubled up kick. Gabriella provides the vocals and they are as natural as the title implies.

Doubt makes his debut on Northern Parallels with previous released music on DVS1's Mistress Recordings imprint. Doubt provides a stripped down version to reveal a chrome dipped skeleton. Dry and sparse percussion, the mix takes on the mood of a mad scientist's laboratory.

Jason Patrick adds his own diverse interpretation with blending atmospheric synth stabs, seamless percussive movement, streamlined by haunting vocals riffs.

Label boss, Mike Derer wraps up the EP with a remix maintaining the feel of the original and also adding dubbed out synth line. The track launches when the percussion take over an already rollicking kick. Mike's stripped down sound reflects the mind of the machine and blares its steely emotions.

fans of minneapolis-based @elysiumalps ' live sets might be surprised to hear him jump around like this. “i wouldn’t play this mix like in an actual club, it just wouldn’t work...i wasn’t so concerned about it being as danceable, even though i did play a lot of club music, that wasn’t really the goal of it, it was to be a bit more open and broad as far as track selection." 

"it’s just something kind of intimate...it feels personal to me, this mix, and I hope that’s kind of conveyed, it’s a mix where I was thinking about a lot of different things...like COVID, and being bummed that I can’t go out and see my friends.”
