red river and then sixth, late afternoon, early october

An evening walk in Shanghai: along the avenue coming back from Old Shanghai, lined with trees and karaoke booths and groups of middle aged women doing amateur group dance performances, like non-flashy flash mobs; a geographic mixtape of everyday sounds both incredibly familiar and fundamentally foreign. Wednesday 21 Jan 2015 - 05:53 AM EST (but in Shanghai).

New Sounds In Old Shanghai (21 January 2015)

My contribution to the Cities and Memory: Oblique Strategies project -- http://citiesandmemory.com/projects/oblique-strategies/ -- Using a field recording I made on 22 January 2015 at the Jade Buddah Temple, Shanghai, China, I applied my Oblique Strategy card's direction fairly literally -- "mute and continue". My source is a recording I made on a TEAC VR-20W a of two groups of Buddhist monks warming up with some chants while a lady speaks with someone on her cellphone. I liked the incongruity of the conversation between the lady and the person at the other end of the line, and the back and forth chanting conversation of two groups of monks, but the lady's voice was very loud, so it made sense to mute her as much as possible whenever she spoke.  I also applied some filters to mute the overall sound. Then continued the muting process somewhat randomly for another couple of generations.
