Exclusive: Ramu - 2049 Rain

The third ride on Magic Carpet comes from Bristol-based Ramu – maybe naming himself after a river in New Guinea, maybe after a fizzy Japanese lemonade or a small village in Bangladesh. As tempting and multifarious these options are Ramu's Magic Carpet debut musically takes the same line: it's a bit of Breakbeat, a whiff of Electro and Jungle, but it is not a mishmash or arbitrariness. It's simply music in its pure- and rawness with three different approaches to it merged in this three tracker. Three however seems to be the magic number for this release – three tracks and the third Magic Carpet ride. The B2, 2049 Rain, is – in defiance of the speculations regarding Ramu's artist name at the beginning – hinting at the eponymous track from the Blade Runner movie. Unsurprisingly 2049 Rain starts as a rather minimalistically held approach with a dark and almost dystopian yet futuristic industrial tone that in the course of time softens. The latter is reached by Ramu adding spacey deep chords and a breakbeat-sequence which is partly enriched with little scratches and HipHop-esque vocals before modulated 8-bit sounds and the beforementioned chords cohere and take this one home – to the clubs where it belongs.

Ramu's EP Ride 03 will be released later this summer on Magic Carpet.

Wow, how time flies. I can’t believe I am putting out record number five already. This release comes from star of the future Adam Pits. I have known Adam for a long time as he was a few years below me at school and then proceeded to go to uni in Leeds like I did. He is from the same crew as Breaka, and there must be something in the water up there because these guys and the rest of their mates are producing the best shit in town right now. 

It is a privilege to put out Adam’s first piece of wax because these two tunes are dynamite from start to finish.
Socket Power, simply put is what you would call a bomb. I have been playing it out for the last six months and without fail it destroys the dance floor every time. That second drop hits, people go nuts, and the ID crew come straight over with their phones at the ready. Danger danger...

As is customary on Holding Hands the B side doesn’t slow down in the slightest. Balance Beam is a combination of spacey European techno mixed with South London 2-step. I hope you like getting repeatedly pummelled by sub bass hits because that is what you are signing up for when you give this one a spin.

For the B2 I have enlisted the remix duties of one of the baddest people in the game. Junq has been putting out the electro tinged bangers for many a year now, and he has truly smashed this remix out of the park. You should have seen the stank face that I was pulling when I first heard it in the studio. As cool as it gets...

All three tracks are produced and sculpted for the club. They want big sound systems and dark rooms.

For the first release of 2020 Banoffee Pies Records introduce “Black Label Series 04” while welcoming another selection of new artists to the fold with a collection of low slung moody tech house for mornings and dusted dance floors.

Opening the release Bernard Horn’s “Ticket 2 Tomar” flaunts a Britney Spears sample to kick the mood off with a drum heavy broken beat full of fluttering synths and spooked out shivers. The A2 comes from friend of the label, and producer of the minute, Alec Falconer, with his tribute track “Hiero”. A misted journey along the shore line or across the water showing a short taster of the more sub heavy productions he’s known for seen across the likes of Entity or other Garage aliases with a clean 4/4 night drive.

Following his outstanding contribution to Holding Hands Records at the end of 2019 in collaboration with Banoffee mainstay producer Gallegos, Baby Rollen kicks off the B side with an acid infused travel rhythm encompassing the Ecco and aquatic feel using sonar like underwater snippets in “Swimming With Dolphins”. The last track comes from Tito Mazzetta and Isai with “Red Bali Tunnel” in true Black Label style. A moving house beat perfect for dusk or dawn creating some semblance of order to round off the dream like states delivered across the release. For slow moving and shaking. BP x
