My cover of the Dire Straits classic Brothers in Arms. I basically learned to play by listening to this album, and to this day whenever I drop my plectrum in a gig, my Knopfler licks come out in my fingerpicking! I've tried to be fairly accurate with this one, but purists will pick 1000 holes in it for sure. Ventured into pure improv by the fade-out.

Here's a blues track I used to enjoy playing with my band The Bath when I was 17. Jof sang it much better than I do, but hey. I actually recorded the rhythm and bass for this in 2001 - 21 years later I decided to finish it! Songwriter was Willie Sonny Boy Williamson - Clapton's version in Tommy is probably the most famous, apart from The Bath, obvs. Featuring Mel on backing vocals.

White Wedding

Here's a great song written and sung by my friend Max Patrick, with all other instruments recorded and/or programmed by me. We recorded this in 2009, and I've recently found the recording in a dark corner of my hard drive and given it a remix. The song is written in the first person, and is about a guy who's realised he's a werewolf. I sing the part of the doctor that the werewolf goes to see - yep, that's me in the low octave doing my best baritone voice. Lots of fun recording these songs back in the day, and a lovely thing to revisit 15 years later.

Don't Ask

Here's a song I wrote about friendship, particularly friends that you don't see often enough. I wrote it in 2008, in that bittersweet time just after good mates had left after a great weekend. You know the feeling - happy but also slightly bereft.

Small World

Bit of a departure for me, this one - bit jazzier chords and a more ambient arrangement. Still plenty of guitar though! - solo was played on a very nice Strat I used to own, had a lovely tone. Lyrics were about a recurring dream I had a lot at the time. Written in 2006, remixed in 2017.

My cover of an old song by one of my best mates, Chris Banks (lyrics by Leo Abrahams). My brother Rich sang vocals on the original which Chris wrote with Leo while he was still at school. Always loved the song, and the whole album, which I'm fairly sure was recorded using Chris's Korg keyboard's onboard sequencer plus a Tascam 4-track. Those were the days...

My cover of Nik Kershaw's brilliant song When A Heart Beats, which I've loved ever since my older brother Matt got Now 6 for Christmas on cassette. Bonkers guitar solo, and a vocal that's clearly a bit too high for me, but what the hell...

My cover of the Zombies 60 Summer of Love classic. Guitar geeks: had my MusicMan Silhouette modded so that I could use the bridge+neck humbuckers together like a Les Paul. Used that sound on the solo, really happy with the tone.

Time Of The Season

So the thought process was "hey, I reckon Lady Madonna would work with a kind of disco feel..." - took that idea and decided to do a silly mash up with Gonna Fly Now from the Rocky movies. Self indulgent in-jokes: the tambourine and "three, four!" is from the Morter and the Bricks version, the fast guitar run at the end of the bridge is a homage to Chris Banks, and the repeated push at the end was nicked from James Morter (did he pinch it from a Macca live album?) and copied by every Lee Brothers ensemble that ever played Lady Madonna live.
