If you're an 80s kid and about to press play on Papillon Rising's debut EP "First Contact", here is what's going to happen:
The quirky sci­fi duo will beam you up on a blissful trip of precious teenage memories. Flashbacks of breakdance practice, synth throbbing action flicks, and your sacred vinyl collection may occur. Maybe neon colored spandex? Aaanyway..
Lead singer P. and beat maker EFF call their extremely dance­able electro pop "Radio Funk", and that seems about right, as they step on the scene with productions tight as funk, belly rubbing bass lines, and songs that stick like glue. The coherent 6­track EP carries a freshly unique signature. It celebrates the music of the 80s, but doesn't settle for mere nostalgia. Papillon Rising crank it up a notch instead of recreating authentically. "First Contact" hits you like a flying roundhouse kick effortlessly landed in the perfect splits between retro vibes and future fatness. So how do the butterfly boys not rip their pants?
The Papillon Rising story:
..Considering the duo's rather unconventional origin story, it all pretty much makes sense: You could say that Papillon Rising's professional music career didn't take off without somewhat of a detour. But let's back up.. Or rather, we have to fast forward, because P. and EFF come from the future. Yep, 2046 to be exact. And you may not like to hear it, but the future is dull, dismal, and under harsh state control. Only the Papillon movement, a group of artists, scientists, and outlaws, continues to fight for freedom and creativity. As the Papillon resistance faces prosecution by the E.F.C.O. (Executive Force for Cultural Order), they
recruit two odd heroes to take a leap of faith ­ a leap back in time. Grumpy mechanic EFF and smart mouthed agent P. team up to find out where it all went wrong. Their butterfly shaped time glider touches down in various decades, and the two discover a common passion for the 80s, especially their music.. But as their investigation leads them towards the 2020s, they attend back to saving the world. Their new destination: 2016. Their perfect disguise: a pop band. Their mission: making fun and funky music. And of course, creating a ripple effect leading to an alternative, bright, and free future.
