Willem Vermandere – roodfluwelen broek en een mutsig hoofddeksel op – vraagt of ik geen zin heb in een potje koffie, ja toch? Hij gaat zitten in zijn fauteuil bij de stoof. De fauteuil praat mee al naargelang Willem niet stil zit. En Willem vertelt. Hij heeft geen vragen nodig. Alles gaat voorbij, maar toch wil hij zoveel mogelijk nog vasthouden, niet loslaten, hij wil voortdoen, leven in, van, voor liedjes, melodieën, in parlando, in grafiek, in beelden. Een artiest wijst het stoppen af. Niet op z’n 82ste, niet zolang het niet anders meer kan. Zijn kleinkunst is grote kunst, zijn vertelsels komen dichter bij de waarheid dan de woordenvloed die media onophoudelijk uitbraken. Hij waardeert waarachtigheid. Ziedaar in zijn werk de mens zoals iedereen hem kent: kwetsbaar, sterfelijk, bang voor de verbeelding, houvast zoekend in letterlijkheid, maar ook hartelijk en liefdevol. Een gesprek op de snee van herfst naar winter.
