The second volume of Emotional Response’s All Trades compilation continues its discourse of bringing a selection of artists together that have contributed an influence on the label and the NTS show the release is named after.  

Running for 7 years plus, the show is a smorgasbord, a hodgepodge of the music enjoyed by label founder, running from ambient beginnings to dance music later, with a lot of dub and smatters of off-kilter, new wave and beatdown electronics in-between.  It is here, that the compilations ideas centre.  

Volume Two opens with one of the outstanding producers of this sphere, in Detlef Weinrich aka Tolouse Low Trax.  A founder of the cult Dusseldorf’s Salon Des Amateurs, as well as a member of krautrock stalwarts, Kreidler, Weinrich has been supporting the label since its inception in 2012, including appearing on soFa DJ’s Elsewhere LVI and remixing supergroup, Dream Machine.  Here a perfect opening with a special unreleased Dub mix of Ossia - featuring guest vocals from Eva Geist - from his most recent album, Leave Me Alone.  

Following is t-woc, Ireland’s mixing master / producer, as with his appearing on Elsewhere LVI, providing a beatdown vox pop, that delicious knack for a hook and floating Latin grooves.  Delightfully, Al Wootton joins the fray, his Altai is intricate percussion showing his journey from Dubstep prodigy, purveyor of UK Garage and with his recent incarnation as co-founder of trio Holy Tongue, a Dub meets Industrial mastering of all things bass.  

Iro Aka, a Barcelona duo steadily gaining attention provide some modern acid dance psychedelics with Generations.  Gentle breakbeats, tripthelightfantastic vocals and twisted fx propel Side two.  Building on releases for Hivern Discs and Terra Magica, their productions and edits lend ears.  The Digidub of HLM38, with the beautifully titled Mystery Train Riddim follows, capturing Julien Viallet’s (General P.D.C / Notte Brigante) project, a welcome counterpoint and hint at future collaborations.  To close this half comes stalwart of sub-label [Emotional] Especial, with friend, uber-designer and producer Jamie Paton.  As that label approaches its own 50th release milestone, Paton jumps over to highlight his “primordial soup”, an acidic dub wide-screen excursion of late make Lost Margins, an aptly titled close.

The final half of All Trades switches it up, with the Balearic bounce of London’s Good Block.  Diggers, DJs, party purveyors and now producers, their 3 self-released EPs are all ‘must haves’ and here, Strong Relax is the light to a lot of the compilation’s darker moments, a wonderful bass and keys skip in the sunshine.  Next Stefan Schwander aka label favourite Harmonious Thelonious / A Rocket In Dub offers his new project, the electronic Dub-Funk swing of While My Sequencer Gently Bleeps and the hopping breaks of the infectiously titled Ready.  Anatolian Weapons return to the label, after appearing on the Elsewhere LVI compilation of past, the ethnic chug of Mountain Echoes the perfect addition from a producer steadily showcasing.  

The final side starts with Shelter, Alain Briand’s wide-ranging project that has encompassed New Age and Balearic leanings, before moving on to House and Breaks and later some Digidub essence for Séance Centre.  Here in The Four Knights Dub, his pushes his love of bass further with a widescreen crashing digital explosion.  Susumu Mukai offers the counterpoint.  From his early electro inspired years with XL, Kitsune and Ed Banger, Mukai has carved a niche as a Bass player extraordinaire, as one half of the Balearic Pop-Funk of Becker & Mukai, the Psychedelic Pop of Vanishing Twin, the new addition to Holy Tongue, plus his recent return as Zongamin for Multi Culti, highlight a man in his prime.  To close, a new artist appears with Akulina.

Pleasure Planet is back in orbit, summoning their favorite producers to reimagine the two lead singles from their self-titled debut album.

Earth Trax transforms Go With Madness into a euphoric peak time corker. Full of smiles and surprises, it’s a pure endorphin rush, and masterclass in making an irresistible dance track.

Maara goes with madness, cranking up the bpm, and conjuring a version that is deep into prog territory. A propulsive proto trance journey through winds and dungeon echoes.

On her version of Alien, Roza Terenzi casts a hypnotic spell of ghostly melodies and vocal hooks. Her deeper interpretation takes listeners on a breakbeat mission through sizzling electronics and emotive sub bass.

Alex Kassian’s Sphinx Gate Mix of Alien closes it out by slowing things down and transporting Alien into nostalgic territory with melodic arps and peak Haceinda-era breaks and bass. If you listen to his emotional remix carefully enough, you may hear a vocal response from Kim Ann’s partner Cora in its final fleeting moments.

3AM Spares is a new compilation of Australian Electronic Dance Music selected by Andras and Instant Peterson, encompassing the darker sounds and later nights of the 1990s and beyond. Following on from forerunner compilation Midnite Spares, this double LP draws from local 12” releases, CDRs and the archives of community radio station 3RRR FM to make a diverse and pumping scene audible once more. No longer confined to beer barns and back rooms, this generation of producers, DJs, clubbers and ravers spilled out into pavilions, warehouses and paddocks, embracing a new culture of machine-metaphor and chemical love.

Future Sound of Melbourne’s warehouse triptych Resist The Beat embodies a time when the country’s youth united with juggernaut stamina, partying beyond the long arm of the law. Restored from the ARIA award-winning trio’s original DATs, this debut 12” incited label offers from Jeff Mills, Frank De Wulf and Carl Cox.

Released by the likes of Clan Analogue, Creative Vibes, Volition, DanceNet, Juice and Psy-Harmonics, this era’s material has evaded sufficient digital documentation until now, some lost in the decommission of Angelfire, Tripod and Geocities websites. Often these bedroom experiments and one-off collaborations existed solely for compilation inclusions, a plausible scenario for the mysterious Inner Harmony. In the case of Tetrphnm, graphic artist Jeremy Dower’s glacial sub-bass was digitised from the only known CD-R copy, preserved by the 3RRR FM library.

Many key figures of this narrative have deep roots in the DIY/post-punk family tree. Third Eye, the impressive evolution of Whirlywirld founder and industrial legend Ollie Olsen, finds common ground with I Will Go, a hypnotic concoction by Adrenalentil and Poets of the Machine associate Jandy Rainbow, a transgender artist whose liberated electronics trace back to 1978.

The most unique take on this new wave of dance music comes from Turrbal-Gubbi Gubbi woman and Stolen Generations survivor Maroochy Barambah. Recorded in New York, Mongungi incorporates two lines of a traditional Gubbi Gubbi song Gurri Nina Nami with the sound palette of tribal house, highlighting the broadening ways that identity and culture were being negotiated and manifested within club music.

A lesson in intelligent appropriation, Artificial’s Sobriquet remix bends one of the most looped samples of all time to fit a wired new generation’s interrogation of that thing called disco. Artificial’s ingenuity was vital impact to the scene, releasing three influential albums as one half of B(if)tek and establishing the WINK Awards - a music prize that recognised and encouraged subversive electronics. Her playfulness is mirrored in Blimp’s frisky garage house, recalling Paul Johnson, while Ian Eccles-Smith’s borrowing is comparatively more discrete on the chillout sampledelic collage The Slaughtering Eye.

Andy Rantzen returns to Efficient Space in two incarnations - as one half of Itch-E + Scratch-E ambient alias Screensaver, and in collaboration with General Electrik on Leather Lover, a cocked and loaded glimpse at the bottom end of Oxford street, originally recorded for the Club Kooky compilation Gay In The Life: Adventures in the Queer Underground. Reinventing himself as Hypnoblob, fellow Sydney Oz Wave artist Ian Andrews also gives us his pneumatic-drill-step Deep Down.
