3AM Spares is a new compilation of Australian Electronic Dance Music selected by Andras and Instant Peterson, encompassing the darker sounds and later nights of the 1990s and beyond. Following on from forerunner compilation Midnite Spares, this double LP draws from local 12” releases, CDRs and the archives of community radio station 3RRR FM to make a diverse and pumping scene audible once more. No longer confined to beer barns and back rooms, this generation of producers, DJs, clubbers and ravers spilled out into pavilions, warehouses and paddocks, embracing a new culture of machine-metaphor and chemical love. 

Future Sound of Melbourne’s warehouse triptych Resist The Beat embodies a time when the country’s youth united with juggernaut stamina, partying beyond the long arm of the law. Restored from the ARIA award-winning trio’s original DATs, this debut 12” incited label offers from Jeff Mills, Frank De Wulf and Carl Cox. 

Released by the likes of Clan Analogue, Creative Vibes, Volition, DanceNet, Juice and Psy-Harmonics, this era’s material has evaded sufficient digital documentation until now, some lost in the decommission of Angelfire, Tripod and Geocities websites. Often these bedroom experiments and one-off collaborations existed solely for compilation inclusions, a plausible scenario for the mysterious Inner Harmony. In the case of Tetrphnm, graphic artist Jeremy Dower’s glacial sub-bass was digitised from the only known CD-R copy, preserved by the 3RRR FM library. 

Many key figures of this narrative have deep roots in the DIY/post-punk family tree. Third Eye, the impressive evolution of Whirlywirld founder and industrial legend Ollie Olsen, finds common ground with I Will Go, a hypnotic concoction by Adrenalentil and Poets of the Machine associate Jandy Rainbow, a transgender artist whose liberated electronics trace back to 1978. 

The most unique take on this new wave of dance music comes from Turrbal-Gubbi Gubbi woman and Stolen Generations survivor Maroochy Barambah. Recorded in New York, Mongungi incorporates two lines of a traditional Gubbi Gubbi song Gurri Nina Nami with the sound palette of tribal house, highlighting the broadening ways that identity and culture were being negotiated and manifested within club music. 

A lesson in intelligent appropriation, Artificial’s Sobriquet remix bends one of the most looped samples of all time to fit a wired new generation’s interrogation of that thing called disco. Artificial’s ingenuity was vital impact to the scene, releasing three influential albums as one half of B(if)tek and establishing the WINK Awards - a music prize that recognised and encouraged subversive electronics. Her playfulness is mirrored in Blimp’s frisky garage house, recalling Paul Johnson, while Ian Eccles-Smith’s borrowing is comparatively more discrete on the chillout sampledelic collage The Slaughtering Eye. 

Andy Rantzen returns to Efficient Space in two incarnations - as one half of Itch-E + Scratch-E ambient alias Screensaver, and in collaboration with General Electrik on Leather Lover, a cocked and loaded glimpse at the bottom end of Oxford street, originally recorded for the Club Kooky compilation Gay In The Life: Adventures in the Queer Underground. Reinventing himself as Hypnoblob, fellow Sydney Oz Wave artist Ian Andrews also gives us his pneumatic-drill-step Deep Down.

Three months after releasing ‘Capsule‘, Melbourne via Brooklyn-based producer Acid Springfield gears up to issue his new album ‘Primitive Landscapes‘...Our pick from the album is 'Troglodyte'. In the sacred mountains of Dandenong, the producer presents a mesmerising downtempo fable that evokes visions of cavemen hunting. As the track opens with rainforest field recordings and digital soundscapes derived from uncanny constellations, it transforms into a space-time hypnosis of ceremonial percussion and a delirium of strange frequencies accompanied by faraway utterances reminiscent of mystical beings.

Representing the city of Geneva here is Second Circle affiliate Androo (androo-3) with his "m'enfin?!" mix in the MFM series. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hi Androo, thanks for contributing. For the readers who haven't been to Geneva before, could you describe the city a bit in terms of culture?

A: Mmmh, there are many things to say about the city. I feel that my generation came just after a certain “golden age” of the “underground” music culture. Geneva had a lot of squats during the 90s and early 2000s but now the political situation isn’t the same. Today we don’t have many non-normative venues allowing experimentally and who aren’t based on economic profit. For me, there is a certain vision missing from various clubs in the city. It feels sad that filling the room seems more important than exploring and defend other ones. I feel the potential of night culture and dance which is based on the collective energy of a certain youth is channeled into a kind of apolitical and dull consumption. I wish one day, the night may serve to create more spaces for political and experimental moments! But there is something amazing going on in Geneva, it’s the sound system scene. 

MFM: Your music as Androo sounds quite melodic and touches many different styles in an oddball kind of way. Where does all that come from? 

A: I was playing the piano when I was a child but I wasn’t working really hard (what’s work when you play?), I always preferred composing little things. There was also music in church. Later, I’ve had some reggae bands. I have always been a bit romantic with music. But the real explosion was the discovery of the sound systems culture. Every two months there was the Dubquake organised by OBF in Geneva (it’s still going strong!). Their style was informed by new wave melodies and futuristic dub sound, their sound and musical explorations created something really physical, experience! Around the same time I discovered what the music studio can be. You mix a new song and the same night you play it out, without a fuss, dubplate style. Later I opened up to other stuff and soon tried to bring together irreconcilable things. For more than a year now, I dived deep into jazz piano and contemporary music. Every day I do exercises, scales, etc, some of them become musical compositions. 

MFM: Could you take us on a tour through your studio? What's the vibe like, what's in there?

A: There is a mixing console with external effects, everything is done live. This is how I learnt it from the dub. I don’t do much arrangement on the computer, the track is being built at the console: you remove the bass now and then put a delay on the piano, everything is recorded in one take. It’s about the hands. There are some mistakes and you let them be, that is what makes music alive. There are some synths and drum machines, boxes of matches, wood pieces. I am just trying things out, it’s kind of a space for experimentation. It’s about researching, letting problems appear, chance is also important. Not everything is smoothen out, it’s about acceptation. You throw stuff on the floor, you accept them and then start from there.

MFM: Are you keeping it strictly to writing and recording music?

A: For now I don’t do electronic live acts. But I do piano lives. I keep them raw and experimental, so in a way it’s also influenced by the dub. I have been DJing since quite some time now. I approach mixing a bit like editing in cinema, I try to do cuts, rapprochements and loose associations. DJing is also somehow about friendship, the fact of doing, of organising parties together. Djing is great but feels a bit repetitive most of the time so I try to propose other things with DJ May and other. We are both drawn to cinema and theatre. So we started to read texts in the middle of a set, adding small dance pieces or even mixing silence. For us it’s about proposing simple and non extraordinary little experiences.
