There are a lot of issues to address. With the pandemic being the first and foremost, dominating our everyday lives, it’s easy to forget the struggles, tragedies and drama that is unfolding on another screen, not ours. It’s interesting to note that humans do not generally unite in happiness – it is the sorrow that we feel together, as a whole. One of the unfolding hardships revolves around refugees. Italian composer and violinist Laura Masotto, whom I first virtually met via 7k!‘s beautiful compilation, String Layers, has volunteered for a non-profit organization, Open Arms, which is dedicated to protecting those who try to reach Europe by sea, and has first-hand witnessed the ongoing misfortunes experiences by daily migrants in the Mediterranean. While working on her album, she wanted to capture the urgency of this ongoing emergency situation, even as the focus on COVID was drowning out other news. For this piece, appropriately titled “Refugees”, Masotto collaborated with the Spanish (and London-based) composer, Roger Goula, to create a piece of music that transmits both, gravity and hope. The track was subsequently used to score the images provided by Open Arms, which propels the immediacy of this cataclysm even further. And if this track premiere does not move your heart, I promise that the video will be remembered. I recommend you play and watch both in this order.

"When Laura contacted me in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic to collaborate on the Refugees single I knew that it would be a significant project, refocusing on an ongoing emergency too often overlooked as the norm. And in fact when I received Laura’s early sketches of the main theme for the piece I felt that sense of fragility but at the same time poignant energy that hugely inspired my musical contribution. The sense of rush of the fast violin arpeggios with yet strong harmonic changes made my imagination fly quickly and react musically in response to it straight away. Through a very organic collaboration with Laura, the music developed to deeply reflect the drama happening every day in the Mediterranean Sea with the hope that the language of music could touch our feelings and encourage our actions.“

The video was made in collaboration with the Spanish NGO Open Arms which is involved in rescuing migrants who depart from the coasts of North Africa and travel Europe. The images used in the video were shot by the operators of Open Arms. “For Laura Masotto (who has long been close to the NGO) it was natural to think of using her music and these images to shine a light on the drama of these migrations.” You can support and donate to the organization here. This is the 5th track and a sad but gentle piano solo song included in '24 Piano Sketches' that is a new solo album from Yuki Murata, the Tokyo-based pianist/composer and member of the cinematic instrumental music band, Anoice, and its side projects, RiLF and Films, who fascinates music fans in the world by her lovely melodies and piano sounds.

As the name suggests, '24 Piano Sketches' includes 24 piano songs which Yuki Murata plays improvisations on her own grand and upright pianos. This long project is going to add 2 songs every month and ultimately 24 songs in one year, allowing the listeners to feel the changing of the season in real-time via the beautiful, warm, and sometimes melancholic piano sounds.

This time, she purposely selected a cassette tape recorder, a MiniDisc player, and an early generation of iPhone as the recording equipments for each song, unlike studio albums from her own bands such as Anoice. These retro and simplistic recording devices were able to capture not only a creaking noise coming from the piano and the environmental sounds outside the window, but also a noise occurred by cheap microphones, which make this album so impressive. Its nostalgic soundscape may remind her listeners of her first solo album 'Films' and second solo album 'Home'.

You should feel the changing of the seasons with the beautiful piano melodies.

About Silophonic

Silophonic is a new work from Bob Guido that explores the sounds and sights of Silo #5 - Silophone Instrument, sonic inhabitation in Montréal, Canada. The video combines new music from Bob Guido, created by using the natural reverberation and acoustics of the Silophone process and photography by Diana Shearwood, the official photographer for the original Silophone project.

Bob created this new music using electric guitar as the source instrument combined with the Silophone as a sound treatment instrument. Silophone makes use of the incredible acoustics of Silo #5 by introducing sounds using communication technologies, into a physical space to create an instrument which blurs the boundaries between music, architecture and net art. Sounds arrive inside Silo #5 by telephone or internet. They are then broadcast into the vast concrete grain storage chambers inside the silo. They are transformed, reverberated, and coloured by the remarkable acoustics of the structure, yielding a stunningly beautiful echo. This sound is captured by microphones and rebroadcast back to it's sender.

Silophone is a project which combines sound, architecture, and communication technologies to transform a significant landmark in the industrial cityscape of Montréal.

Silo #5 is an abandoned grain storage facility in the port of Montréal. A quarter of a mile long and over twenty storeys high, it has a total capacity of five million bushels, or enough wheat to make 230 million loaves of bread. The building was constructed in several stages between 1903 and 1958. The newest part of the building was designed to last for generations, however due to changes in the global grain market and to the general trend of de-industrialization in North America at the end of the 20th century, the building became redundant less than forty years after its completion. Since 1994, Silo #5 has stood empty, and its fate has been hotly debated. The building is situated in one of Montréal's oldest industrial districts, now rapidly being gentrified and renovated for high-tech commercial, luxury residential, and tourism/leisure industry uses.

The portion of the structure used by Silophone is constructed entirely of reinforced concrete, measures 200 metres long, 16 metres wide and approximately 45 metres at its highest point. The main section of the building is formed of approximately 115 vertical chambers, all 30 metres high and up to 8 metres in diameter. These tall parallel cylinders, whose form evokes the structure of an enormous organ, have exceptional acoustic properties: most notably, a stunning reverberation time of over 20 seconds. Anything played inside the Silo is euphonized, made beautiful, by the acoustics of the structure. All those who have entered have found it an overwhelming and unforgettable experience.
