Pilu is Indian evergreen raga, which uses all the chromatic notes, which all the notes have visitation rights. Pilu raga is performed late afternoon before sunset.

Mishra is a word from Sanskrit that means mixed, which allows tremendous scope for the artist to bring in melodic lines from other ragas. Mishra Pilu raga is full of devotion and piety by expressing the mesmerizing mix of emotions, which are an eternal source for human emotions: joy and sadness, longing, tenderness.

My intention was to create slow motion changes, which on the one hand are based on very strict patterns, and on the other hand – can hardly be noticeable.

The work was commissioned by the “The Night With…” with support from Creative Scotland and PRS foundation in 2021/2022.

The work was performed by Emma Jane Lloyd (violin) at Summerhall, Newington, in Edinburgh on 4 April, 2022.

Mishra Pilu

In Sanskrit language, Azaya has many different meanings symbolizing various connotations, for example: point, will, thought, intention, meaning, property, fortune, fate, soul and etc.
The structure of Azaya is based on a textile weave, which was mapped from the predator drone engine.
The piece develops from the bumblebee sounds, followed by low rumbling sounds, which transform into longer and deeper glissando. Throughout the piece, dynamics grows from ppp to ff until motives weave into monolith soundscape. At the same
time, harmony and tonal range expands developing into tutti of frightening buzzing noise.
The work was commissioned by the Lithuanian contemporary music festival Muzikos Ruduo and Lithuanian Composers’ Union. The piece was premiered by saxophone quartet Quasar (Soprano saxophone – Marie-Chantal Leclair, Alto saxophone – Mathieu Leclair, Tenor Saxophone André Leroux, Barytone saxophone – Jean-Marc Bouchard) on 9 October, at Energy and Technology Museum, in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2024.

The Assignment: Make music for a haunted spy film.

Step 1: It’s intriguing that the word “spook” regularly means “haunt” (verb) but also can mean “spy” (noun). Consider this.

Step 2: This project coincides with Halloween 2025, so imagine a spooky spy film, and write some music for it.

Each composition is based on the transformation of the various textile patterns or weaves into musical language. The methodology of mapping is concluded in PhD thesis at Durham University.  Textile patterns reflects distinct motions and atmosphere due its different structure and description. Indian ragas serves for the structure of harmony in order to construct a close relationship between sounds and textile patterns. Every Indian ragas has its own time, duration, specific mode of pitches as the textile patterns, which reflect various cultures and weaving methods.
