We're back with some strong stuff this week: Hicky & Kalo like their Whiskey neat and present this week's exclusive episode on Schirmchendrink. We love their powerful music and are extremely happy they included some brand new and unreleased tracks in the mix!

Hicky & Kalo are a DJ and Producer duo born and raised in Montreal, Canada. Both classical musically trained and both having a diploma in electronic music at the University Of Montreal, they have gone on to craft a stellar reputation for their inimitable edge, commitment to the scene and penchant for deep melodic grooves. 

The young pair, resident of the famous Stereo Montreal club and founders of budding imprint records label Plaisirs Sonores Records, (@PlaisirsSonoresRecords) are now firmly placed among the vanguard in dictating the new sound of the worldwide underground melodic scene.

One of New York City's rising talents, Dylan Scott Farrugia, better known as Dysco, has proven his artistic ability to both fans and peers alike. Whether in his home country of Malta, or on the streets of New York City, Dysco completely immersed himself in the culture of electronic music from the jump. With a keen ear for the future sounds of the underground, and a quick mind for creating stellar music, Dysco was quickly recognized as an artist to watch.

Dysco's passion and hard work in the scene were recognized as word spread throughout the NYC Nightlife community - ultimately leading him to perform the halls of legendary nightclubs such as Output, Pacha, Sankeys, and Cielo in New York, as well as Gianpula and La Grotta in Malta, Tanz Bar City Hall in Poland - all before the age of 25.

Flash forward through many late nights in production and vibrant sets across the years, Dysco is now taking his game to the next level through powerful original work that pays homage to the past, present, and future of Underground music. With his rich, dark melodic sound, expect only the best from the man known as Dysco!

Catalyst 031 - Dysco

Dastan translates to story. As a journeyman of dance music, and a fan of the long form experience, he’s been obsessed with quality sound and the state of being lost in music. Dastan started as a resident DJ in Washington, D.C. for the last seven years, championing residencies in seminal nightclubs Flash & Eighteenth Street Lounge, as well as in the underground and festival circuit. In 2020, he found a family as a resident with Nick Warren’s imprint, The Soundgarden. The momentum has been consistent where he’s twice been the Global Journey DJ for Tomorrowland festival in Belgium, touring Europe, North & South America, as well as in remote locations and festivals where he’s been summoned. Dastan has been called upon to support alongside some of his own heroes, including Audiofly, Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo, Goldcap, Behrouz, Oliver Koletzki, Armen Miran, and Enamour. Always finding himself on the darker side of deep house/techno his sets dance to a strong middle eastern and tribal flair.

“This episode I’m sharing a recording of the last 90 minutes of a 2.5-hour opening set for Sasha & Digweed earlier this month at Avant Gardner in Great Hall. Of course, warming up for such legendary DJs is itself an honor, but this night was particularly special as it brought out so many friends who had not been out in a long time, adding to the pressure of crafting the right progression to fill the room and set up the rest of the night, in a way that equally respects both the headliner and partygoer. "The goal of this mix was to straddle the line between a few different sounds I’m really vibing on right now. We start things off with some haunting melodic house and transition through some indie dance and ultimately land with some peak-time bangers that have been sure bets for me this summer.

I have always been a firm believer in the power of spoken word samples from across the world to elevate house music into a more cerebral place. I have also included a collection of vocal records that tug at the heartstrings and, I hope, pull you into goosebump territory. Great songwriting in any genre is impressive, but I hold a special place in my heart for those producers and vocalists who can bring everything together in an underground record that can also work with a broader audience.

The last time I did an Electronic Groove Podcast was nearly a decade ago! Big thanks to the EG team for their continuing hard work to shine a spotlight on the various elements that make this music and culture special.

On a more somber note, please keep an eye on friends and family that may have gone quiet over the last few weeks or months. Everyone’s dealing with some level of depression, anxiety, and burnout due to the pandemic and the state of our world right now, so try to do your part to help those that may be struggling know that you’re there and feel less alone. Burning Man was nothing like I wanted it to be. All facts pointing it wasn’t my time to be there. No luck with tickets, close friends who would usually push me giving up, expensive and long flights.. etc. 
Facts aside, came to me an inner-voice so powerful I couldn’t help but to listen to it, and by August I finally started to plan. Less than a month to go, no tickets, no camp or tent or RV.. By that time it was also way too late to join most of the line-ups. I started to act as everything was set and done anyways: got my flights, spread the word, and slowly the stars started to align.

When at the “Burning Man that I wanted”, I didn’t see the friends I planned to see, I didn’t play the places I thought I could, I didn’t catch most of the events I wanted to. I just had the Burning Man that I needed, and it was a wild and freaking dusty one!!! Played only a few and special sets, had more time to explore amazing art, meet new beings, tighten up old friendships or get lost in the dust!

We were all there for a reason. In the immediate sense to see the “burning of the man”: a symbol of structure and government and judgment. And when the fire show started, all I could hear was exclamations of anger and pure wonder. In a grander sense, however, we were all there to expand our views, bodies, minds, and spirits, exploding like the flames in front of us into a rebirth!

What I gained from this experience was a greater understanding of the power of the collective, and that things happen exactly how they are supposed to. To trust the process and work together. Everyone in that desert did their part to build the city, to provide an experience for each soul that passed by. In this moment of fire and destruction, we used our power as one to build an energy field filled with creativity, love, and compassion.

XYZ and When We Dip present the Selectors series, where we give our family of producers an opportunity to display their prowess behind the decks. Expect unreleased material from across the label collective, as well as classic gems and heady grooves from some of the undergrounds finest heads.

Josta debuted on TOR with his collaboration with Massio, taking on Nothing In The Dark, harnessing psychedelic tones and swirling soundscapes, playing with the mind while providing crisp percussion to please the senses. For his Selectors mix, Josta touches upon global influences with dips and dives into diverse crevices of organic house flavor.

Temptation lurked behind the trees. As I walked across a clearing, I heard them singing. Between the leaves, the sounds poured out. From the branches it had to come. I called, I screamed, I lost my voice. All I wanted was to get back to the cave. Evening was already here, darkness was coming. Quickly the tropical sun would leave the day behind. I had to go back, the climb was a mortal danger in the darkness. But the melody forced me to follow it. The melody was so beautiful. Again I screamed. Who are you, what do you want? Leave me alone! Go away, just go away. Please, go away. The thorns tore my skin again, the fear drove my pulse through my organs. The grace of the sound brought tears to my eyes. I cried without restraint. Where are you, where are you going? I stood among the palm trees, the melody lost on the edge of the beach. The sun was sinking behind the ocean. A tropical storm was brewing over the horizon, lightning flashed many miles away across the beguiling color gradient of the sky.

Our guest musician Wassu, who has already released on Anjunadeep and all day i dream, captures with his set the emotional chaos of autumn, which triggers the grace of the sounds. Stirred, enraptured... agitated, confused...

"As a DJ and a producer I always try to be authentic and to reflect what I feel. Being able to record a 3 hour and 33 minute set for a well respected platform like Flow is an opportunity I did not want to miss.
I plunged myself into the deep and more obscure tracks in comparison to the stuff I usually play at clubs or big festivals and I went to a club in my hometown Ghent (BE) to record this mix on a big sound system in order to immerse myself into a real flow.
Starting out with some really deep electronic music for the first hour in order to create the perfect vibe and then to build onwards to what I consider a timeless vibe.”
