With their profound take on electronic music, Animistic Beliefs have steadily solidified their spot in the global underground. Influenced by cultural concepts such as ancestry, animism and mythology, as well as the languages of political techno, punk, bubbling and IDM. ‘Animism’ is the idea found in indigenous belief systems that all objects, creatures and places possess a spiritual essence. Pre-colonial thought, traditions and music connected with Marvin’s Moluccan and Linh’s Vietnamese-Chinese heritage are key inspirations and tools through which the duo explore their experience as queer POC living in the Netherlands.

Firas Shehadeh is a Palestinian artist and researcher based in Vienna. His work engages with worldbuilding, meaning, aesthetics, and identity after/on the Internet. He is interested in post-colonial effects, technology, and history. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including Images Festival (Toronto, 2024), Centre d’Art Santa Mònica (Barcelona, 2023), Filmforum (Los Angeles, 2023), Unsafe+Sounds (Vienna, 2023), Qattan Foundation (Ramallah, 2023), Belvedere 21 (Vienna, 2023), the 7th Cairo Video Festival (2017), and Berlinale Forum Expanded (2014).

As we have always dealt with sound as a political category, our activism is based on listening and focuses on the revolutionary potential that is inherent in the sonic. Under the banner of Sonic Agency we want to enforce a sonic activism of opposition and resistance. The artists involved are advocating for social and political transformation. Their sounds lend themselves to global emancipatory struggles, and fights for freedom and equality. The featured sounds aren’t complicit in the silence that surrounds us. They are furious, desperate, crying, paralysed, compassionate and rebellious like us. There is a message in sound that cannot be negated.

Listening is not neutral.
Listening shapes the reality we live in.
Listening is shaped by ethics and politics and leads back to it.
Listening is directly linked to memory and identity.
Listening is as important as speaking.
Listing is an active act.

C’est comme ça qu’on désigne le monde physique depuis un espace virtuel, quelque chose comme le nom de domaine de la réalité.
Je fais de la musique entre deux mondes, celui où je me promène en silence, que j’observe pour y trouver quelque chose à raconter, et celui où j’enregistre, où je duplique, où je coupe, où j’archive, où je sauvegarde, où je partage.
Je fais des chansons pour passer de l’un à l’autre, pour que tout tienne ensemble, le dedans et le dehors, les instants et les traces.
