“Once upon a time, along the coasts of this sea, passed the silk road, the route of salt and spices, oils and perfumes, amber and ornaments, tools and weapons, of wisdom and knowledge, art and science. Here different people and races have continued to interweave, unite and dispute for centuries as perhaps in no other religion on this planet”.

These are the words that introduce - in Italian, on the back cover of the vinyl- the new album by Flankup Recordings ‘Sidi Bou Said’ (the second to date in the young catalogue of the Italian label), out in December 2023 on vinyl and in January 2024 in its streaming/download versions. It is the very first issue of the new homonym sonic pair, composed of Paolo Russi (one half of the two masterminds behind the imprint/aka Discojuice) and Marco Lanfranchi (aka Indy).

The Milanese duo, who originally joined forces over the creation of the score for a short documentary film, which aimed to tell the story of two brotherly cultures (the Sicilians and Tunisians from the northern coast) later, through the energy that their music generated, got the idea of making it a proper record.

‘Sidi Bou Said’ is, indeed, a stunning five-track composition, to be released on vinyl and digital versions where Paolo and Marco lay out such an inspiring array of Arabic influenced Disco, Afro-House and Balearic rhythms to give life to an acoustic, perceptible musical exploration through those Mediterranean lands and gathering, in the most sensitive and conscious way, the sounds that portray them.

The EP takes the listener on an auditive pilgrimage to the loudest and most vibrant Sicilian road markets with ‘Babbaluci’, then on to the unmistakable essences of the spices and the sounds belonging to the streets of the white and turquoise neighbourhood ‘Sidi Bou Said’, located north of Tunis. Then to the coastal town of ‘Hel Haouaria’ with its wind and shiny waters. This specific track sees the birth of an alliance with Byron The Aquarius, who gives his very personal interpretation with a ‘Late Night Dub’, before drumming back into the reprise of the ‘Sidi Bou Said Theme’.

‘Sidi Bou Said’ EP represents its creators’ sonic experience, with its estival sounds recalling a distant-near dimension, full of warm, intense and vivid feelings, to be relived anytime soon.

Reel People Music breathes new life into its gleaming vault of back catalogue classics with brand new series Fusion Moves. The series will offer talented music-makers the opportunity to remix and reinterpret label releases of their choosing, kicking off with soulful progressive Kaidi Tatham in the hot seat.

The 3rd single released on 16th February 2024 is Reel People feat. Mica Paris’ reworked I Want To Thank You where Tatham gains elegant funk and boogie bounce, a bubblin b-line and those upweighted backing vocals adding new urgency and depth.

“I know Reel People Music’s discography so well that I had a pretty immediate sense of the tracks I wanted to work with once they gave me the keys to their kingdom,” Tatham explains. “For each song I closed my eyes, imagined playing them live on stage and let the chords and musicality fire from there. My sound incorporates so many different styles, from hip-hop and broken beat to soul and disco. It’s a perfect fit for Fusion Moves. The Reel People team share my mission statement to make people dance, smile and think.”

Based in Belfast, Kaidi Tatham is the multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ who helped to define West London’s iconic broken beat sound during the late Nineties but who has continued to operate beyond genres and pigeonholes – be that via albums including In Search Of Hope, Bandana and Don’t Rush The Process, his dance music-focused pseudonym Agent K and a raft of collaborations including those with Bugz In The Attic, 4Hero, Amp Fiddler, Amy Winehouse and Slum Village.

Reel People Music is a label borne out of the soulful success of acclaimed collective Reel People but representing so much more. Launched in late 2009, the imprint has built a fiercely loyal international fanbase through its passion for artist development, musicianship, song-craft and soulful groove. Label alumni include Tony Momrelle, Portia Monique, The Layabouts, Kelli Sae, Sebb Junior, Opolopo, Angela Johnson, Emmaculate and Mothers Favorite Child.

Vapour Recordings returns for 2024 and this time we welcome SQL to the label for his debut release with us.

For 15+ years now, Pim van Horssen has produced music under the moniker SQL. No secret to the techno scene, Pim's story began in 2009 when the self-taught Dutch producer was launched onto the international stage a year after his first ever release. ‘Distorted Reality’ held the Beatport minimal #1 chart position for six weeks.

Pim then went on to heavy touring and performing at numerous high-profile events, including the Loveland Festival in Holland and the Eclipse Festival in Australia. He played shows across the globe, including in India, Mexico, Canada, and Brazil. His releases on labels such as Gem Records, Outpost, Elevate, Anjunadeep and Mango music, all showcased his increasingly sophisticated sound and helped establish him as a mainstay in the techno and progressive scenes.

After some time out, we finally welcome SQL to Vapour Recordings with this 2 tracker cracker EP.

With ‘Distortion’, Ralf Kobernuss delivers sepulchral Techno Noir with a thundering Industrial substructure alongside a bright and snappy reimagination by Rancido for DESSERT029.

‘Distortion unfolds oceans of darkly phasing pads, washed-out vocal chants, and hypnotizing saw-wave sweeps that surge across a corrugated rumble of drums. Ralf Kobernuss’ morphing themes open up a shuddering witching hour of mesmeric synth work and punishing low-end for late nights and early mornings.

Rancido contrasts the oozing darkness with an anthemic synth hook, searing stabs, and brightly pulsating percussive salvos. 
Cascading arpeggios cut through the original’s spaced- out pads, transforming ‘Distorsion’ into a razor-sharp floor-focused groover.

‘Distortion fuses powerfully anesthetic soundscapes with pounding subs and analog drums, bringing a hypnotic brand of left-field techno to the dancefloor with punishing intensity.
