Through their repertoire, the Symphonic Band reflects on life and on sources of inspiration. For many their inspiration is family, friends and life experiences. Students are also inspired by musicians with whom they play in the Symphonic Band and by their incredible community. Each year the Symphonic Band commissions a composer to write a major work for the ensemble to perform. In 2013 Edward Fairlie composed Storm & Urge, a musical journey of emotional turbulence. “Storm and Urge” is the literal English translation of the German “Sturm und Drang”, a literary and musical movement of the late 1700s. “Sturm und Drang” was all about extremes of emotion and the individual’s response to them. A hallmark of the examined life is the need, every now and again, for upheaval. Something comes along to put a stone in your shoe – as if to say, “It’s time to grow”. This piece tracks that journey.

In 2014 Taran Carter composed Moondani: Black, a memorial to Black Saturday and the communities who were affected. In 2009, the Black Saturday bushfires destroyed lives, homes and farms throughout the St.Andrews region including that of Moondani, the composer, Taran Carter’s family home.

The thought provoking themes of the repertoires that these gifted composers have provided the ensemble with ensure that the journey is rich and connected to the young musician’s lives.
2014 is an exciting year for the Music Department, as the Symphonic Band and Stage Band prepare for a tour of the USA in December. As part of this tour they will have the opportunity to work with some of the world’s greatest composers and educators, as well as attend concerts by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, United States Air Force Band, United States Navy Band and the Sibelius Academy Wind Ensemble.
