Following on from the success of Arbey Gonzalez’s ‘Aleana’, Nature Rec welcomes Andre Moret back to the label for a new EP. As one of Brazil’s most highly regarded progressive house artists, Andre has achieved many successes across his five year career. World class DJs Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren have been regular supporters, while his inimitable productions have found a home on Clubsonica, Freegrant Music, Plattenbank, The Soundgarden and more. Having appeared on Nature three times previously, Andre now makes a welcome return to the label for his first solo artist EP entitled ‘Max’, alongside remixes from Leo Perez and Peve & Nehli.

Although known for his smooth progressive style, of late Andre has been exploring the organic side of house and with ‘Max’ comes some of the first reveals of this sound from the Brazilian. Dusty drums and soulful instrumentation play beautifully across the expansive eight minute running time, but it’s the amalgamation of the parts which truly delights here. The lead elements are so distinctive and tasteful that Andre let’s them breathe just as the should, nicely interwoven with bending tones and a healthy does of celestial atmospherics which provide a gorgeous backdrop during a heartfelt break. The companion piece ‘Wind Bends’ goes deeper with a similarly impressive array of exotic drums and cross-cultural motifs. There’s a freeform feel to this which is absolutely amazing, and perhaps the track’s strongest suit as you feel like your listening to a live performance in a way.

The lone interpretation of ‘Max’ is provided by Nature boss Leo Perez who we last heard from in June with his remix of ‘Piedad’ by Arbey Gonzalez. Leo goes for a pacier version with the tempo rising a touch but the overall vibe of the remix remains quite deep. Carefully crafted chord stabs pave the way for a fluttery lead theme which carries the sensibility of the original quite nicely, ultimately coming to full fruition across a spacious break, which does wonders to reset the vibe for a finale which is equal parts percussive and groovy.

Rounding out the release are label debutants Peve & Nehli who provide the lone interpretation of ‘Wind Bends’. Best known for their collaborations for Hoomidaas and Zenebona, the Brazilian pair combine their extensive forces once again for an exceptional remix here. Trippy and daring in equal measure, this psychedelic style is something I wish we’d see more of in organic house, as the duo paints a prophetic story with deconstructed elements and freeform effects which are backed by stompy beats and mesmerizing percussion to close out the release on an inspired note. Highly recommended.

"On the next installment of Karakter Records, the label spotlights a truly unique geographic combination where Brazil meets Russia with a Portuguese-Indian blend. Art in Motion and Panorama Channel met in Russia a little over two years ago, sparking the connection that eventually led up to this unique release. “The Last Adventure of Voodoo Houngan” is as fitting a name as ever; already feeding the imagination while the soundtrack fills in the last blanks. The hypnotic rhythms, whispers and pads slowly explain how the dark omen influenced the fate that befell upon Houngan, grasping for a last method to give his final sacrifice a purpose. Or perhaps you tell a different story with that you hear?

Both Art in Motion and Panorama Channel have already earned their spurs as pioneers of the deep, rhythmic and emotional blend of house music. Brazilian producer Vicente Amadeo has seen his earlier works being released on NYC-based Stranjjur and Mother recordings (and earning plays by all the big diggers, such as Lee Burridge and Laurent Garnier), while the Panorama Channel guys have made a steady rise in recent years with their two EP’s on Biologic Records, grasping the attention of for instance Âme and Abstraxion.

Lastly, we are honored that Lisbon based @Switchdance makes his return on Karakter with a remix based around grooving drums, delivering the deepest piece of this release.

'Raven', the final of the four tracks and the lead single released alongside a Jonas Rathsman remix, intrigues with chants and empowerment just as much as with its determination and fragility. Falling from the highest heights, Raven lets you rediscover who you are when you hit the ground. Carried by a throbbing four-on- the-floor kick drum and covered in a synth-haze that is hard to resist, you’ll float along, fall and rise with the everlasting wave-like movement of human existence.

Jonas Ratshman's remix of Raven is just as easy to indulge in as the original. With a strong emphasis on offbeat elements and skilfully placed high-end melodic fragments, Ratshman's remix grows into a slightly more dance floor orientated version of the tune. Bright chords and subtly placed vocal crescendo's inviting in forgotten summer feels are complemented by cleverly layered call-response build up's, leading you astray in a maze of your own thoughts whilst dancing the night away. A mellow kick sound that makes you want to move steadily, an early on-set vocal taking you by the hand. This remix is a dreamlike and wistful marriage between pumping low- ends from the techno world and spine-tingling bright pads, driving beats and glistening shimmers of sweet high-end effects. Ratshman has managed to highlight another shade of the original - a co-release that makes for a tempting addition. Raven is demanding. It's like falling out of the sky into deep waters, getting lost and being found, over and over and over.
