Jumbo is a giant in the so-called 'World music' scene. Born in Cape Town, Jumbo left for London in the mid-1970s to find himself at the center of a musical revolution. Starting out at Virgin Records in the days when it was just a record shop and instrumental in its Reggae-centric Frontline division, to developing Chris Blackwell's Mango imprint under Island Records, and then running his own label Earthworks in the late 80s, Jumbo played a huge but often-overlooked role in the popularisation of Reggae and African music, putting out some of the first recordings by Youssou N'Dour, Johnny Clegg, Busi Mhlongo, Baaba Maal, and Salif Keita.

Back in Cape Town after three decades abroad, we kicked it with Jumbo at his Cape Town home and talked music. And the man was kind enough to make us a mix CD, ripping many of the tracks from their original vinyl - and he's been involved in all of them, whether in production, A&R or distribution.

Amnesia Scanner - AS Too Wrong (Nahshi 160 Edit)

The first single from Loraine James' new album 'Reflection' is a solo introduction and a reset. It's a direct song called Simple Stuff vocalled directly and diaristically by Loraine, a minimal, gentle plea to be treated equally (as a black, queer woman) over criss-crossing drums. Loraine's vocals dissolve into distortion and fx's as if they are getting lost and then heard again.
