The attacks in Paris and Istanbul have shaken Europe to its core. What possesses a young person to strap a suicide vest to his per-son, aiming to maim and kill civilians? While we hear many stories of failed integration across Europe, there are also stories of Muslim communities where radical Islamist views have never gained a foothold. What are these communities doing right? What can civil society do to help these communities flush out the poison of radicalism? Is there a role for the European Union in preventing radicalization?

Unearthing the seeds of Islamic radicalization in Europe

Listen to a debate with Rebecca Murray (Libya correspondent)and Joost Hiltermann (MENA Director at the International Crisis Group) on the situation in Libya and peace prospects in the country. The discussion focused on how Libyans see the current peacemaking efforts by the UN, the presence of violent extremism and its implications to regional stability, as well as stories from Libya’s tribal areas. Understanding the conflict in Libya

The European Institute of Peace (EIP) is a new initiative at the heart of Europe with a global scope. The EIP is an independent partner to the European Union and Europe, augmenting its global peace agenda through mediation and informal dialogue. The Institute pursues multi-track diplomacy and acts as a flexible, external tool in support of EU mediation efforts where the EU has limited freedom to act. It also serves as an operational hub, and connects existing expertise and shares knowledge and lessons on European mediation.
