Toolroom kicks off 2023 with the latest edition of Leaders Of The New School – an album series devoted to championing new and emerging talent in House and Techno. 

The album welcomes 16 new and upcoming artists to the label, each a graduate of the renowned Toolroom Academy production school. Established in 2015 as the label’s educational arm, the Academy exists to break down the barriers between new artists and the electronic music industry via cutting-edge music education and mentorship. 

Leaders Of The New School 2023 boasts a wide variety of fresh international acts, including label debuts from established artists Harpoon, Dale Move, Nolek, CHESSER and breaking through undiscovered talents such as HARRT, Charmian Love, Loz Seka, Myla and Emma Clair.

Leo Janeiro is the influential Brazilian who runs things behind the scenes with Get Physical Music's Latin America-focussed sub-label. Arguably one of the most outstanding DJs to emerge from Brazil’s close-knit electronic music scene, his taste and technical ability made him a much-loved Warung and D-Edge resident who has gone on to play around the world. He has released a number of superb singles on this label and now returns in brilliant fashion.

'Marambaia' kicks off with a hip-swinging disco-house groove. Retro-future drums and synths have classic vocals over the top as lush chords bring Latin soul. It's a timeless jam with lovely cosmic melodies and a feel-good vibe that will warm up any dance floor. 'Uncle Silva' is just as unique. It's another stylish and musical cut with loose percussion over fat bass. Acid twitches and big string samples add colour and build the tension as this charismatic cut races onwards with a real sense of spirit and a spine-tingling vocal.

These are two life-affirming and original tunes from Janeiro.

DJ Laurel marks his maiden voyage with Hot Digits Music with a four track, slow-motion groove-a-thon that tips a wink to the summer and happier times…

This sumptuous slow-mo ride starts with the title track ‘Play My Music’ – a soulful, 105bpm warm embrace that wraps around you and promises to never let go. The deft touches of rhythm guitar, roving bassline, brass and piano are second only to the soaring vocal which provides the heart and soul of the track. 

Track 2 is the aptly titled ‘That’s What Time It Is’, apt because you’ll know exactly what time it is when this outrageously filthy piano led stomper grabs you by the collar. Some nice and subtle gospel vibes can be detected here, but the main attraction is the irresistible urge to join this peaceful march through blues riffs, organ solos and those furiously catchy piano chords. A call to arms, some might say. 

Up next is ‘Street Tough’. DJ Laurel proves yet again that the downtempo vibe is not only alive and kicking but heaving like a crowded beach bar offering free beer. The kind of swishy, sultry groove that DJ Laurel has become almost synonymous with, this rolls perfectly along in its own ethereal vapour. You’ll never get tired of the sassy vocal. It’ll stay in your head forever, accompanied by the sax solo. If you’re not waking up every morning singing ‘Street Tough’ then we have failed. 

Lastly is the Fingerman Re-edit of ‘Play My Music’. The Hot Digits head honcho rolls back the years for this one and gets his best scalpels and synths out to lay down a seriously sexy and funky number. This solid 105bpm chugger has it all – glorious piano, bongos galore, driving bass, Rogers-esque guitar and that infectious, soul piercing vocal (with an added delightful twist).  A tune that has one eye on the summer and one toe in the pool – it’s on.

DJ Laurel’s ‘Play My Music’ EP is up there with the best downtempo goodness on Hot Digits – a carefully crafted, masterfully produced EP which is sure to be regarded as a classic in years to come.
