Pre 'This is Not This Heat', Charles Bullen treated us to a short improvised solo set of dulcimer and prepared guitar. Superspeed hammers, looped rhythms and muted, buzzed out notes - these sounds exist on their own eerie shelf.

Prepared Guitar

This composition was made from a contiguous excerpt of a longer recording made in the evening of August 17, 2020 in the Bangor City Forest, Bangor, Maine, USA. We are hearing sound from three different hydrophones in a tiny pond and a stereo microphone receiving an airborne soundscape. I was surprised at the amount of activity in the pond at dusk, in which we hear snails rasping, diving beetles stridulating and, possibly, frogs bumping into the hydrophones. And the tree crickets in the forest, mostly pine tree crickets (Oecanthus pini), create a real wall of sound.

Dedicated to the great bassist Gary Peacock, who died today (September 5, 2020) at age 85. Requiescat in pace.
