For Joseph Kamaru (KMRU) a Nairobi-born Berlin-based sound artist, sound is a sensorial medium through which social, material and conceptual interpretations are manifested in his works. KMRU carries with him a repository of listening experiences from Nairobi and beyond expanding his sonic practices, bringing an awareness of surroundings through creative compositions, installations and performances. He has earned international acclaim from his performances and releases , at the Barbican, Berlin Atonal, Présences électronique, and releases on Editions Mego, Subtext, Seil Records. KMRU has carved out a serious and definitive space on the list of essential authors in ambient experimental music – one of the most prolific and innovative artists in his field.

Spurred on by the acuteness of current global events, we are raising our voices in solidarity with the oppressed, the tortured, the silenced, and the unheard. While humanity is at stake, and our values are on trial, in moments of despair, rage and endless grief, acts of solidarity are needed more than ever. The events that shake Palestine and Israel are resulting in an ever-tighter spiral of violence and desperation. They are a horrific wake-up call that brutally brings the precarious situation on our planet to the fore. The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, and Israel’s collective punishment of Palestinian civilians are intolerable. On top of that, the military actions threaten the lives of the remaining hostages in the Gaza-Strip, and even more innocent people in Gaza.

Listening is not neutral.
Listening shapes the reality we live in.
Listening is shaped by ethics and politics and leads back to it.
Listening is directly linked to memory and identity.

SONIC AGENCY - KMRU - "A Noise Withing"

Appropriating the title from the homonymous album made by Coil and an unknown entity (ELpH), for the 7th edition of Naked Gums, Vanja revisits the past, delving into the world of glitch, presenting music by Alder and Elius, Autechre, Beaumont Hannant, Boards of Canada, Germ, Imminent, Mick Harris, Mira Calix, Plaid, Polygon Window (aka Aphex Twin), Professor Broxburn, and Quinoline Yellow. Tackling a collection of over 1500 tracks posed a formidable challenge – how to navigate this vast sonic tapestry, reducing it into 2 hours, while maintaining listenability? Given the programmed nature of some tracks, they may prove quite challenging, especially for first-time listeners. The objective was to craft a well-balanced soundscape, resonating with various atmospheres and emotional states – from the melancholy of lost love to the beauty of life, nostalgia, excitement, and the utter chaos. Play it loud.
