Doug Harlow was born with a memorable voice. His children described it as “gravely” and “authoritative.” His wife called it “a voice that would have sounded good on the radio.” Doug refined his writing chops as a beat poet in Boston and these days, works as a print journalist in Maine. His livelihood depends on his ability to communicate. In 2005, Doug was diagnosed with cancer and underwent throat surgery. Losing his vocal chords saved his life, but cost him his voice. With the aid of an electrolarynx and a determination to adjust, this is the story of how Doug recovered his power of speech.

Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts is the largest living history museum in New England. The village covers 200-acres of working farmland and 40 historic buildings. A rotating cast of men and women don period clothes while performing 19th century roles for the public. These “historical interpreters” are trained in period skills, everything from carding wool to spinning thread, printing on an ink press to doling out caramels at the general store. Emily Kwong takes listeners inside the village for meet these men and women and to apprehend why they chose to spend their 9 to 5 workday in a bygone era.
