Welcome to Episode #85 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which sees Imran connect with Bay Area DJ and selector, Justin Nerstylist.

As one who prefers to be a DJ not in the limelight, he's long been a music fan first and a champion of the independent.  This episode sees us explore Justin's affections for jazz, his joy of digging, his passion for music-based travels which have taken him to London and Japan; we discuss what led Justin to DJ'ing, those early experiences performing for crowds and his desire to help jazz become embedded within the Bay Area.

About this interpretation: 

My 'younger brother' here is my (much) younger self in the early 1980s, pictured here, when I proudly owned an Octave Cat monosynth and a 4-track portastudio to make music with. What you hear is pre-planned; each part played by hand, multitracked, and bounced down to extend beyond the 4 cassette tracks available. So, for example, drums were recorded part by part, as was each note of each chord, each sound created from scratch - with no presets ... So, please be kind to my 'younger brother' before judging TOO harshly! ;-)

This is an original mixdown to stereo cassette, no editing or remixing - including the terrible 'drum break'! - so it couldn't be more authentic! Enjoy! 😜

Tribute to New York City. 

Saying goodbye to New York was very hard for me. This is undoubtedly a painful process. I went through this when I left my homeland 6 years ago. At first it drains you. Then you take all your hands and gradually fill life with new meaning, because time heals.

On Thanksgiving, I wanted to record something special to express my gratitude to New York, the city that taught me so much and to send a message to all the amazing, kind, responsive and incredibly talented people I met there, to those who became my friends, to everyone who shared a piece of themselves with me. In this music - you, me, all of us. 

I recorded this set on Thanksgiving NIght at Cranes (Restaurant) in Washington DC | November 23rd 2023.

This track was inspired by a recording that was taken and given to me by my father, of my mom when she was about half my age. I owe them both greatly for my love of music, and this is one way to honor my mother after her passing.

Inner Reflections is a deeply personal project.
Each beat here was crafted during a time where I simply needed to slow down and reconnect with the pure essence of sound.

Unlike my remix projects, this release is all about capturing calmness, introspection, and soul — giving my beats a more relaxed, meditative space to breathe.

Every track is a small window into quiet moments, emotions that don't always need words, only melodies.

Eki Shola’s vibrant career in music and medicine can be described best by the artist herself, “I create music not only for myself, but to generate a space for the listener. Music is healing.” A talented vocalist and pianist, Eki Shola’s music transcends genre, as she seamlessly draws from jazz, electronica, world, and new music to create a sonic landscape all her own. Her music has been described as  “…sound art to be used to trigger thought and encourage love and beauty through rhythm and unique composition.”

Born in London to Jamaican parents, Eki Shola was raised in a musical family. She emigrated to New York in the late 1980s and later as a pre-med student at Cornell University, she played in the jazz ensemble performing with legendary musicians such as Steve Turre and Dr. Donald Byrd. Now living in Northern California, Eki released her debut album, Final Beginning, in 2016 and the album has been reviewed, charted and aired around the world. In both 2017 and 2018 Eki Shola was awarded the NorBay Music Award for Best Electronica Artist. She has played across the San Francisco Bay Area, London, and New York City and along with sharing the stage with Georgia Anne Muldrow and Lucky Otis, she has been asked to open for renowned artists such as Kitaro, Bebel Gilberto, DakhaBrakha, and Habib Koité & Bassekou Kouyate. After submitting her song “Dreaming”, filmed among the ruins of her incinerated home, Eki Shola was selected to perform at the 2018 NPR Tiny Desk Contest. Honoring the one-year anniversary of the wildfires, her personal story was recently featured in a PBS TV special, “The New Normal: Visions of Healing”.
