"Bristol–based producer Caski comes through with his latest offering, the 'Traitor' EP. The second release from Manchester–based Trapped Audio, the 12″ features two new cuts showcasing the producer's current vibe. Also featured is fellow Bristolian OH91's take on the title track; as well as a smooth twostep collab on the flip with up and coming producer Near. 

"Since emerging in 2012 on dubstep pioneer El-B's legendary Ghost Recordings, Caski, has garnered a reputation for creating compelling and increasingly experimental bass music of the highest order; gaining support from the likes of Mumdance, Akkord and Pinch. His sounds vibrate in a realm not too far away from the likes of Lamont and Biome. Off the back of releases on Electro Magnetic Fields, Keysound and Tectonic, this release sees him venturing further away from the 140 bpm template and further into his own world of idiosyncratic rhythms and tones. Eery and dark, without being bleak or negative, the tracks roll through meticulous and complex rhythms; moving towards the abrasive - yet never taking a step away from the danceable. This EP is another expertly crafted piece of art from Caski that adds to the ever-growing styles of his back catalogue. Due for release early March, this one's sure to move fast off the shelves..."

I am a vessel. A muffled mass. A bulk. Extent. A womb. I move. So I am neither here nor there. Always somewhere in between. To give substance to this frame, I carve out a piece of me. Sometimes a shape, sometimes a form. Into this space I pour what besieges me: words, pictures, you. So we can become me. Viscosity and temperature dictate the time it takes. When it is done, I break the mold I am. I take the cast inside and place it by the others.

That is when it starts tormenting me. It gives a face to the unsaid and an empire to what I could not bury. It now has a weight and a consistency I can no longer avoid. Still eager to escape, I turn my back on it and hobble ineptly away. But the space it has left within my frame begins to throb. It flickers, moans and aches. It chars. I can sometimes ignore what's there, but I can never hide from what’s gone. So I run. (Text: Fred Aerden)

LUGH announces debut EP ‘Hélico’ to be released via label and platform @c-a-n-v-a-s on summer solstice, 21st June 2018.

The Berlin-based artist makes use of digitally disembodied vocal sounds and textures as a compositional tool for creating new environments on Hélico, in attempt to draw his listener into an affected and emotive state. However, LUGH strives to leave the listener short of creating a true connection to the source of the sound. The outcome is a very real and tangible experience that is somehow lost in an uncanny virtual space.

The opening track, ‘Million Dollar Cowboy’ revs up this specific depiction to its utmost resulting in an eerie and evocative space formed by the overlap of what is recognizably human, tangible and familiar with the aseptic sterility of the digital. This is followed by the rupturing of ‘Teeth in My Hands’ clearing the air for a new environment to be created, by the third track, ‘Skototrope’.

‘Skototrope’ is about the self-realisation and acknowledgement of a certain attraction to somehow somber and negative realities. The track portrays the delicate tension between feelings of disappointment and defeat and the tender affection for those negative aspects, which one continues to cherish and explore.

Introducing LUGH’s disembodied and distorted voice on ‘Moan Jiro’, the track disrupts his reflective state with a raw burst of energy and the only conventional rhythmic moment on ‘Hélico’. The same distorted voice navigates a somehow cosmic space on ‘No Tassels’. Closing track, ‘Tropics’, creates a narrative “like a micro-opera for the themes and characters encountered along the release”.

After having previously existed as a showcase where LUGH had performed and collaborated with other London based artists, C.A.N.V.A.S has morphed into a platform for the coexistence of a geographically increasingly disparate group of artists, manifested through events held in London, Berlin and Ireland.

Victor Metske is a Rotterdam-based electronic musician, who is normally known for his energetic club-ready style of production and for the label Bound Centre, which he co-founded with Ice Viper, Imhotel & Ezra V. On katharsis, he presents a more introspective and thoughtful side of himself with his EP “In The Midst Of Things”, which seems to stem from this weird year of isolation and quarantine.

The 4 tracks of the EP send us on a contemplative journey through our feelings, spanning from the blissful pads on the beautiful opener “Flour On Her Feet” to the more disturbing and anxious plucked strings on “First Sight”. Metske states the following about the release:

“In the midst of things, in between life changing events and entirely new daily routines there were small moments where I could sit down and reflect. The four tracks of this EP were created in these small pockets of time. During the pregnancy of my girlfriend, after the birth of our son, at the arrival of a global crisis.

Melodic and atmospheric elements previously hidden in my send channels have been braving the foreground of my productions for a while now. But more recently I've been able to use these elements to translate the weight of recent events directly into some of my music. All four tracks represent very personal abstract feelings that I could never put to words.

Within these four tracks, I can hear feelings of joy, love, doubt and melancholy scream back at me. I can hear myself settling into a new world, struggling with relinquishing control and discovering calmth.”
