Teksti aluseks on kolm sarnaste motiividega laulu, millest esimese kirjutas 1890. a. Väike-Maarja kihelkonnas üles Johannes (Johann) Reise (EKM ERA, H II 11, 770/1 (58)), teise kogusid Karuse kihelkonnas 1845. a. Jaan ja Juhan Jaanson (EKM ERA, H II 33, 117/20 (80)). Kolmanda salvestas Herbert Tampere 1962. a. Kristjan Kiviloolt Kuusalu kihelkonnast (EKM ERA, RKM, Mgn II 734 a). Kristjan Kiviloo laulu salvestusest on võetud ka siinse laulu viis.

Ajal, kui suur osa Eestist kuulus Venemaa Keisririigi koosseisu, viidi siit sõjaväkke kümneid tuhandeid nekruteid. Teenistusaeg oli väga pikk (aastatel 1793-1831 isegi kuni 25 aastat).
