Well known for his role in Zodiak Commune and his former Technononsense residency at the Effenaar, this DJ has been at the heart of the scene for over 30 years. Robert Hood @ Energy Rave Zurich (199608xx)

Part of the late '90's internet mix-tape exchanges was this high energy set from Jay Denham recorded at the legendary club F.U.S.E. in Brussels, Belgium. The French-speaking station "Radio 21" started broadcasting recorded DJ sets from the club in the late '90s feeding the internet-based DJ set collecting scene and offering people like me a way to experience a wide range of DJ's, styles and music. Lots of these sets triggered the "I gotta have this track, does anyone know its name?" craze and without Shazam this lead to searching for a particular track for years on end before finally encountering someone who could identify the track.

This mix contains a lot of track from Jay's own label, Black Nation Records, and many tracks contain the typical "deep rolling bass" sound of US Techno back in those days which sounded a lot different from European Techno which sounded a lot "flatter" and "simpler". Enjoy!

An old favorite and "easy listening" techno mix from Billy Nasty, head of the Tortured and Electrix labels which starts out with a great intro and then grooves into dancing goodness with Smith & Selway's techno/tech-house classic "Move" and only gets better from there. Enjoy!

After my brother introduced me to Jeff Mills' CD "Live at the Liquid Room Tokyo" it was love at first sight: Jeff's signature pounding, high-contrast sets mixing straight-up floor fillers with melodious detroit techno and groovy, funky tracks has defined my personal music taste from that point on.

One of the first sets I acquired on the internet was this set from I Love Techno 1999 which was broadcast by the French-speaking Belgian radio station "Radio 21" which was on top of youth and underground culture at the time.

I must have heard it hundreds of times and have been hunting for tracks featured in it for years. Enjoy!

Jeff Mills @ I Love Techno 1999 (Radio 21 version)

My first introduction to DJ Stingray was from this mix I obtained of his appearance in Rotterdam's "famous to those who knew" Bootleg DJ Cafe in 2003. Back then his style was something I had never heard before and the sound made an profound impact on me as something new, fast, hard but funky and very futuristic.

Some of the tracks in this mix have been on my wishlist for ages, a  a lot have never been identified. As always, feel free to comment if you know any of them.

DJ Stingray @ Bootleg DJ Cafe, Rotterdam (2003-07-19)

When I first bought Robert Hood's "Minimal Nation" EP in 1999, it was love at first sound: this was stripped down, minimal -but funky- techno that worked great on the dance floor and had plenty of layers to it to make you want to listen to it over and over again.

I saw him DJ for the first time in November 2000 in Ekko in Utrecht, a small venue. I loved his 2 hour set all the more for the fact that I loved every track of it and didn't know any of them, so there was still a lot of great techno out there for me to find.

That particular set was never recorded, but this set from the same year comes pretty close to how I remember it. Enjoy!

From my personal "stash" of collected DJ set comes this classic banging set from Jeff Mills playing in one of the best Dutch underground clubs that ever existed: Doornroosje in Nijmegen.

Another favorite from my collection of classic mixes if this one by DJ Hell, which -strangely enough-, is nowhere to be found on soundcloud.

For me the best part of the mix starts around the 70-minute mark where he performs a Hell-signature-non-synchronized mix into Black Strobe's "Innerstrings" that suddenly changes the tone and tempo of the mix after which he seamlessly moves back into some top-of-the-line techno tracks.

This is a set of recordings I made of the 2006-2007 season's opening night at the Effenaar in Eindhoven. I was not allowed to record Aril Brikha's liveset which was very enjoyable, but I do have my own warm-up set of the night and the Oliver Ho's 2-hour closing set of the night.
