The seed of this mix was sown in the late 90's when I first clapped ears on 'There's A Riot Goin' On' by Sly & The Family Stone. I was DJ'ing a bit at the time mixing old soul and funk with dance records, which was a bit of a schlep (bloody live drummers).
So when I heard a drum machine (or ‘funk box’ as Sly called it) providing the rhythm for such warm, soulful songs I immediately planned to do a mix of ‘drum machine soul’.
