An 80's Baby making 80's music in the 2020s.

I had 1980's Madonna in mind when I composed this song. It would turn out to be an 80's song but certainly not for Madonna. I love it anyhow!

Ode to the 80's

Of my three-part songwriting process, the third and final step, writing the lyrics, is what I enjoy most. 

Perhaps because I am approaching the finish line, I have a sustained excitement and energy that only ebbed and flowed while producing the music in step one and creating the melody in step two.

Or maybe it is because the heavy lifting was in the music & melody making; with the music and melody in place, the lyrics are already conceived and fully baked, I only need to birth them on paper. 

Or certainly it is because I can write lyrics anytime, anywhere. I have written lyrics while on the plane, in the library, and even as I sit in near darkness in a music hall, club or theatre inspired by the words or sounds that has come from the artist standing centerstage.  

It is in this sweet love affair with Lyric that the world will move all around us and we can still do our thing. In the quiet, in the darkness, in the air….everywhere. 

I wrote the lyrics to Window in a couple of hours. And it goes like this…..

The murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd brought so much rage filling my insides, I had to pull it out of me and place it somewhere. This song is the alchemy of that rage. 

Three generations are on this track: My real-life Unc, DJ Danny is with me on this one and the youngest and most special of all is my then 8-year-old daughter, Sanaa.

Part of the inspiration from the "Let It Come" saga comes from a quote from the Cat In The Hat cartoon: "Go slow and the world will come to you." I am reminded of this quote with every playback of Let It Come

This iteration of "Let It Come" came during the end of the most intense period of the pandemic. I returned from two trips to the west coast and composed this more energetic and lifted version compared to the "east" of the same name.

And  because I think of the different versions of "Let It Come" as songs that came to me from one of the four directions, this one is labeled "west" because it blew from the winds coming from the west.
