Rolf Hind’s new work Blue to the Throat is a sequence of eight movements for the singer Elaine Mitchener who performed it at Wigmore Hall with Apartment House. Each of the movements takes a different view from philosophy, poetry and nature of the idea of the throat from Catholic blessings of the throat, to Sanskrit and the natural world and an eloquent new poem by Dante Micheaux.

Furiously collaborative in their nature and also two-thirds of The Rolling Calf trio, Elaine Mitchener /Neil Charles grace Supernormal for a special edition of the Charles-Mitchener duo setup. Titled ‘SPEAK[ING] OUT’, Charles’ double bass improvisations and electronic textures will form the soundbed for Mitchener’s radical vocal interpretations of political texts and poems.

The Rolling Calf is a black power trio led by vocalist Elaine Mitchener, with saxophonist Jason Yarde and
bassist Neil Charles. The trio’s performances combine texts by revolutionary African-disaporic thinkers with collective electroacoustic improvisation to strike a new bridgehead for the black British avant garde.

First half:
The Rolling Calf’s vocalist and founder Elaine Mitchener is joined by special guest, leading improvising pianist Pat Thomas, in a programme that will explore, deconstruct and dissect some well known jazz standards.

Second half
The Rolling Calf trio performs a programme titled Myths And Dreams in which they invoke African- diasporic texts to access an otherworldly surrealist realm of cosmic ritualistic ‘shredding’. The programme will draw on texts from poems by: Aimé Césaire, Kamau Braithwaite, Una Marson, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, Jay Bernard and 
M NourbeSe Philip.

Tom Service with cutting-edge and experimental new music

On tonight's show, the world premiere of Jamaican composer Mikhail Johnson's Tell! Jonkonnu, Tell! In it he weaves a tale of the Jamaican folk festival Jonkonnu using a cast of characters, there's intrigue, empathy, hope, and social commentary all packaged in a hugely exciting and ever-changing sound world. The vocal soloist Elaine Mitchener talks to us about bringing the various characters to life in this first performance with Ensemble Klang from London's Wigmore Hall. Tom also introduces a new piece by Hannah Kendall from the same concert.

Sara Mohr-Pietsch presents radical 1970s minimalist music by Julius Eastman and Frederic Rzewski from the 2016 London Contemporary Music Festival. Immerse yourself in Eastman's recently rediscovered hour-long blissed-out 'Femenine' [sic], composed in 1974 and here given its UK premiere by Apartment House. And vocalist Elaine Mitchener joins the ensemble for Frederic Rzewski's response to the 1971 Attica prison riots, his raw, punchy 'Coming Together'.
