My first try at chiptune! And yeah, I know someone has probably done an 8 bit cover of My Ordinary Life (I didn't check) but this concept was stuck in my brain and /I/ had to be the one to do it too! :)

Oh kay so this took me like a solid few days of working, but I'm tired of listening to the same 7 minutes worth of electronic beep-boops so I'm sending it out in the world without prior checking (wish me luck). 
I love Achilles Come Down, I love the Dark Academia aesthetic, and I also love the Retro 8-Bit aesthetic - so why not combine the two? 
There are so many scenarios I can imagine with this track... A hero turned villain, antihero, overthrown king, villain who has had /enough/... all in that 8-bit vibe!

..Here it is! My pride and joy! So excited to share this (and, with it, my love for SU) with the world <3

Here is the explanation as to my musical decisions in this cover, and the credits -

Everyone probably already knows this info, but I did a lot of research on the music of Steven Universe a while back for an academic project, and part of the composition process the SU team went through was creating a unique musical palette for each character. I obviously wanted to paint these palettes into my cover.

Play-by-play:
Pearl begins on the piano.
Steven joins in; chiptune/triangle wave. 
Connie complements Steven's lovely tune; violin (this isn't in her palette but she plays the violin!)
Garnet wants in on the fun; synth bass
Amethyst is the final Crystal Gem to enter the fray with her loose, swing drums, creating the entire jazz quartet

We have hints of Rose Quartz, as remembered by others (and, as a secondary palette, Lion, as well as Steven's Gem powers) as strings which swell beneath the existing ensemble in the chorus
As we fall from the climax of the chorus, Greg brings out his guitar (again, not his palette - maybe secondary - but he plays guitar)
Everyone stops; 
Pearl makes way for Greg and Steven's duet (which reflects the tough relationship between Greg and Pearl)
...Then everyone falls back into the familiar rhythm and tune (including Pearl and Greg, now able to co-exist and collaborate)
With Lapis, celesta, and Peridot, sine wave, also entering at this time
Finally, Steven's human physical strength is portrayed by low horn swells at the end of the piece

Idek what to call this... Basically, I slowed MOL and made it jazzy but also it's still electronic-y but also it's insanely demonic, chaotic and unhinged?? Lol

Obviously, the events of the arrangement are very much up to the listener, but in my perspective – you walk down to a basement full of noise, wondering what’s going on. You think it’s just a secret party, a speakeasy if you will. But upon hearing more and more disturbing noise, and the words of the leader, you realise that it’s actually not... But once you’ve realised, it’s too late, because they’ve noticed you’re there and you now are forced to join their bacchanal >:)

This was. SO much fun to make. And I'm actually so pleased with the result!

I heard this song on TikTok a few months back and became instantly obsessed with it. And unfortunately there aren't any full MIDI transcriptions, so I thought that I would have to transcribe basically the whole thing myself. But! I started out this project with the absolutely insane piano transcription by F.I.R.E. on MuseScore, and honestly I think it's even better than if I had the note-for-note (that bassline for one... damn).

In NO WORLD could I ever do this song justice. 
No bragging but according to Spotify I did listen to it 193 times (and definitely more since after Wrapped came out!), not to be obsessed or anything…. and I also ranked top 0.5% of Ghost's listeners lol. I wish I could tell Ghost how much their music means to me, but alas, they are currently unreachable.
But this all means I can never be happy with a cover since the original is so static in my mind. However, because it was literally my top song this year, probably by a mile, I feel I must pay homage to it at least slightly, even in this parodical manner (at least it feels like that, because how could I ever rate to the original!).

I feel like I’ve very much been inspired by REVIII and Outlast 2, and probably a bunch other horror video games. Then also the wave of analogue horror videos on YouTube I’ve watched recently (or watched people watch? Lol I’m too scared to watch them by myself). 
And also, this is the first time I’ve used dulcimer as a solo instrument, and as long as you look past the ‘BBC Sherlock’ vibes lol it's such a cool instrument and the sounds it can make are so cool, big shout out to Spitfire Audio's LABS because they have such amazing VSTs on offer FOR FREE bruh how is that real
