Either Sea - An Assembly

Movements in Two Positions is a piece for two fixed hand positions upon the piano keyboard. A fixed hand position is a position that remains present throughout the piece. For this piece the player chooses a hand position for each hand, with the left hand to the left of the right hands position. All ten fingers must inhabit different keys. I usually do this by putting my hands down upon the keyboard without looking at which notes I am covering. Once the position is decided, it has been set for the whole piece.

This time, there are ghosts of positions - a surface where two hands were locked in an endless pattern. Within this six minute performance, these ghosts gradually ascend and descend the central area of the keyboard, a semitone at a time, never going too far off track..

cloud thoughts (2017)
a composition between nautical twilight & astronomical twilight

written with 50 primary school children as part of the Music For Young Players project with Sound and Music, UK and hcmf, UK.

Programme note:

On the morning of the last day of August I performed a piece through nautical and civil twilight, beginning at 4:51am and ending at 6:14am. I opened the windows to catch the first birdsong and watch the sky lighten through the performance. I installed the piece at an art event two days later and asked that it only be heard by people visiting in the morning. I titled the piece clear thoughts (31.08.17). A single word is split on two notes over a piano chord, between traffic sounds and the sounds of my fridge. There are hardly any birds at all.

The children from Oak CE Primary School are performing through the end of nautical twilight this evening. Their recorder quartet is performing the two notes from clear thoughts (31.08.17) over a counter motive composed for this performance. The children from Howard Park Community School will begin performing at the start of astronomical twilight this evening. If the curtains are closed or the street lamps are too bright, we can imagine the sky changing colour around us.

Untroubled Light - Craig Ogden & Youth Orchestra

Either Sea is a chamber piece that was written for Drift ensemble (voice, violin, recorders, electric guitar, vibraphone and electronics). It was premiered in St Paul’s Hall, Huddersfield on 21st September 2019 as an audience entered a concert. A diffuse recording mixed in 5.1 started just before the audience entered. The recording tries to capture a hum I heard about in an exhibition of butterflies in LA, California. For tiny moments amongst the recording environment, the five performers imitate very brief reflections of the sea from the insides of seashells. These brief moments are over as soon as they start; spiralling inward for the 16-minute duration of the piece as the audience gradually became aware that the piece surrounding them has started.
