Techno est mollis - part 2

Don’t be fooled by the name, Clouds are about as rough and spiky as it gets. Words like “rowdy”, “boisterous” and “ragged” have been used to describe Calum Macleod and Liam Robertson’s voluminous output together on the likes of Soma and Fifth Wall, with the unlikely Turbo shouldering most of the brunt. And since the release of their album, Ghost Systems Rave, Clouds have only gotten more gnarled and savage, as their Tannhauser Acid Works series and latest cassette release for Opal Tapes will attest. But ‘Roadslip Timemender’ could be their most formidable yet.

From a clean slate Clouds present four scuzzy techno cuts full of rattling irreverence that settle in nicely between AnD’s gun-slinging and Sawlin & Subjected’s heady, virulent soundscapes. On the A-side “Maverick Scrabble” dives straight in without pausing for breath whilst “Castres Olympique” slides around on un-oiled hinges as it layers itself up over time. Dramatic chords, rattles, bells, static noise and industrial pangs are all woven in, making this a densely packed and textural number. Then on the flip “Coast Range Arc (Tuff Stuff Hardcore)” is like a blast from some cavernous subterranean workshop fathoms below the surface, leaving “Polgate Slamen” to close things on a tough, tight and itchy tip. “Fixed Kaos Network Fee” is your digital freebee that’s big, bold and wildly unpredictable—use it well.

“Ayni” is a defining concept of mutual reciprocity in the Andean understanding of community. While using the idea as a call to unity and indiscriminate support in the NYC dance community, Buzzi continues to show his growth as a Bushwick born and bred techno producer. 'Thermal' and 'Protection' are the prime time tracks, belting out carefully placed percussive elements in a narrative style the producer cultivated while studying the masters who came before him. 'Second Article' holds its ground with a relentless Detroit-inspired beat and steady melody.

Jabal is the title of the forthcoming release by Kendojubaki and Dj Ali through Berlin based Label ‘Live From Earth’. The release is the second instalment of the labels Live From Earth Klub series. 'Jabal’ translates to mountain in Arabic. It is also where the two artists roots trace back to in their home country of Lebanon. The listeners receive a glimpse of the socio-political issues surrounding the jabal areas across Lebanon through unique sampling, cathartic melodies and hardcore drum elements across the tracks.

Serving as the primary source for Klangkuenstler's demonic productions, the Berlin label Outworld is by now a go-to for driving, industrial-strength techno with a penchant for firy hooks and hellishly atmospheric soundscapes. On catalogue number 005, Klangkuenstler orchestrates a dynamic tension between rock-hard underworld grooves and transcendental ascension, as implied by its title 'Himmelreich'.

The A1 of the same name pointedly encapsulates this age-old pull between dark and light within the wicked waltz of a punchy power-beat and a sugary, elevating synth lead: imagine the devil knocking on heaven's door. Next up, the gnarly scrap-metal fuzz, insidious pads and trademark poetic spoken-word of 'Alte Zeit' reject relief for something altogether more vicious – yet no less fulfilling. 'Jugend Ohne Gott', the EP's grand closer, also carries a captivating duality in its heart. Here, regal strings add a bittersweet melancholy to the bouncy oomph of its percussion, once again underlining that Klangkuenstler stands for fierce techno and epic emotions, nailing a feeling of frictions evermore present in our world.
