Hackney Rooms is a kaleidoscopic sound journey created by Electric Farmer made entirely from fragments of sound recorded by a group of young Hackney artists during lockdown.

The everyday sounds from nine Hackney rooms – voices, domestic sounds, the bleeps, buzzes and hums of urban life –  have been transposed, tuned, morphed and then woven together, exploding into a rich and varied landscape of sound and music.

Urban Expression

I was working on some melodies and decided to look for some vocal to sample...I drag and dropped PJ Harveys "The Slow Drug" and after a little tuning I realised I could rework the whole song. Apologies to any avid PJ Harvey fans but if you ask me, mine is probably the most sympathetic remix...as after working on this for a while I discovered it was a commonly sampled song. See what you think anyway.

This is my first remix. I was jsut experimenting and I didn't want to use something typical. I've been a fan of Queen Adreena since their early days and "My Silent Undoing" is a beautiful track. So I've dared to give it a bit of an urban twist. I hope I haven't ruined it for anyone, let me know what you think!

I recorded this way back in 2012 and it's been sat on my hard drive ever since. The guitar was purely improvised and recorded using a Samsung S2 phone.

Spur Of The Moment

I was noodling around on the guitar one day when I found this very simple chord that just resonated with me. I quickly recorded it and built the rest of the track around it. I wrote it about 6 years ago now. Not much good sat on my hard drive!

Happy Where I Am

I wrote this track at a really strange time during my last year at uni (2017). I was stressed, anxious, doubtful and in a dark place. The music was built around a field recording at rush hour in King's Cross station where someone was playing Barry Manilow's 'It Could Be Magic' on the public piano at the station. I stretched and retuned the recordings which resulted in this awesome rhythmic tone. Some of the percussion is made from a kitchen sink and an industrial dishwasher.

A Means To An End

Something I wrote for a production music library. The brief was "electronic percussion." Might need some more cowbell.

A Lofi track I composed for a publishing company earlier this year. It was fun writing this.

Study Break

Electric Farmer (Elisha Lewis) is a music producer from Wolverhampton, now based in London. Using DAW software, he builds his music around (or entirely from) field recordings, which carry memories and energies that are particular to that a specific moment, environment or person.

As a facilitator, Elisha also works with other musicians to develop skills in music creation, encouraging people to discover the creative potential within the textures, rhythms and tones of their own environment. His practice is underpinned by his belief that music production doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, or academic.
