Beneath Water is a site-specific mobile + audio experience set in Hastings, created by Kevin Grist / SparkedEcho. Approx running time 20 minutes.

In the year 2119, Hastings America Ground is underwater - forgotten and uninhabited. 

As a volunteer for the local museum, you have offered to go down and take a look.  What will you find? Can you solve the puzzles? How will you want the area to be remembered?

NightWatchers was a new opera performed on Folkestone Harbour Arm during 2019.

"One winter evening, the villagers respond to a Mayday signal at sea."

SparkedEcho / Fat Lady Opera presented the Micro Opera Festival at Folkestone Harbour, exploring themes of belonging, change, the point of no return and how location shapes our identity. The festival offered a range of engaging debates and live shows including Belongings, Carmen, and the emotive NightWatchers, an outdoor show on the harbour arm.

NightWatchers - Storm Soundscape (by Kevin Grist)

Solace is an interactive sound and video installation inspired by The Sussex Downs and includes nature sound recordings collected by local people. During 2019-20 it exhibited at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, DC1 Gallery Eastbourne and The Crypt Gallery Seaford. 

The work has been created by artists Karen Tilley (installation, moving image) and Kevin Grist (sound, music), which responds differently to each site. It invites audiences to ask questions about our relationship to open and urban space, our wellbeing and digital authenticity. 

The project is keen to get more local people involved in experimental art, and there was an accompanying programme of artist talks and nature sound recording activities to support this.

From hand-washing and NHS clapping, to birdsong and Zoom glitches, our sound world at home has truly changed. Kevin Grist from SparkedEcho worked with co-creator Julie Gidlow in Hastings to remotely sample the lockdown using their phones, resulting in a composition that evolved over time. Commissioned by MSL Digital as part of their Salons programme. Broadcast on Isolation Station Hastings on 5 July 2020.
