Electric Mirage @ The Hub St. Petersburg (Lounge, 80s & 90s remixes, chillout, nu disco, house)

I spent months trying different combinations of kicks and burned snares, and forked the project three times before figuring out what I wanted to do.

This track was inspired by the lovely pads in Circulation's "Fruju", and Jon Holland's "Absolute Zero" from Vectorman on the Sega Genesis, of all things. I played the piano growing up, so it was nice to revisit my rusty piano skills to record the piano parts on this by keyboard! 

Mixing and polishing isn't quite done, so feedback is very welcome. Enjoy!

Homage to the theme from Bungie's 1995 game, Marathon 2: Durandal by Power of Seven, a.k.a. Paul Sebastian/Psykosonik

I recognized that it was just about impossible to outdo the original track for a number of reasons, and so it was probably best to take it in my own direction rather than try to copy perfection.

Originally I planned to go in a more dub-techno direction, but I favour heavy, complex synths and so I ate that path instead. If it isn't obvious, the main, bassy synth lead in the mid-range I called "Durandal's voice" and that's the role its meant to play, supported by the bassy legato stabs, plus distorted guitar and reverbed acoustic guitar in the mid-high range. The slower pace and complex arrangements were inspired here by some of my favourite deep-indie/electro artists, Future Bones and Damon Jee on Tici Taci.

I still want to experiment what it might sound like with more dub chords and a more warehousey kick, maybe a different mix to release with it.

This track was inspired by the lovely pads in Circulation's "Fruju", and Jon Holland's "Absolute Zero" from Vectorman on the Sega Genesis, of all things (you might hear the absolute-zero-inspired arpeggiator during the drop).

This is the latest draft of the track, but I need to get off my ass to finish a companion track for it to release on an EP. Enjoy!

The theme to Killer Instinct has lived in my head rent-free since the first night I heard it as a kid. Trying to live up to Robin Beanland's beautiful original score and Mick Gordon's insanely incredible take for the KI reboot, I struggled with this track for months before figuring out what I really wanted to do with it. This is my synthwave take on the KI theme. I hope you like it :)

Synthwave and Retro Prog @ St. Pete Science Festival

The original Killer Instinct theme has lived rent-free in my head since I was a kid playing the GameBoy version in the car on the way home. Even on a tiny mono speaker, the lead melody spoke to my soul.

This track is a love letter to video games and the power they have to move people, with a massive "thank you" to inspirations Robin Beanland and Mick Gordon, who composed the original and the 2014 themes for Killer Instinct, respectively.

I am putting this track up on bandcamp with a $0 minimum because I don't want someone not to be able to have a track they really like just because they don't have a credit card or the budget to buy music each month. That being said, if you would like to give more than that, it is very appreciated! I've spent easily over 500 hours on this track alone (the earlier versions were pretty terrible!), so I hope you love it as much as I do!

Forged Instinct

Electric Mirage is the project of Douglas Black and Daniel Fowler to bring honest music back to the radio and dancefloor. Douglas wears his '80s and '90s influences on his sleeves, but adds his own sensibilities to create unique, atmospheric, and heart-felt melodic music that reaches across decades and genres. With his first release "Absolute Zero" on Framewerk's Capital Heaven record label, Electric Mirage is off to a very promising start.


Douglas Black and Daniel Fowler met in the Hong Kong nightlife scene and quickly became close friends with a shared passion for music and games.

They also share a passion for connecting with people, and the vision of Electric Mirage was born: create a world where people can come together, express themselves, and connect while listening to meticulously curated music from around the globe. A world with good vibes, good taste, and good company.

Douglas and Daniel’s performances quickly gained the DJ duo respect and followers in their adopted home of Hong Kong, and their rooftop gatherings became cherished memories for many attendees.

In 2020, Douglas Black began his musical residency on well-known UK breaks station, Cutters Choice Radio, and began developing his idea of what a music podcast should be. Each episode of coheres around exploring a story or idea through a variety of tracks from around the world, with quality and honesty being the most important criteria for selected tracks.

Douglas is currently based out of Tampa Bay, Florida area. Daniel is based out of Lisbon, Portugal.
