DC Promo Tracks: Bad Lieutenant "STEEL"

As My Friend Dario's last album Senza Estate soundtracks another summer, Hell Yeah return to it for a new package featuring the single 'Marittimo' in original form, as an album mix, and with a remix from Eddie C.

'Marittimo' is named after the monthly summer party Dario hosts at Pazmaya in Focallo. It's a loose and exotic rhythm built on elastic drums and peppered with toms, hits, bird calls and shakers. Subtle chords dance up top and fleshy bass is offset by freeform wooden melodies that bring a perfectly organic and sun-baked sound.

The remix comes from Canadian disco master and Red Motorbike label boss Eddie C, who turns up the heat and builds the tempo. His loopy mix is heavier, with chord stabs and big drum energy serving up a steamy main dish to get the dance floor full up.

This is another delicious taste of My Friend Dario's irresistible full length.

One of our longtime NY peeps, Duane has always taken his own path and carved out a meaningful sensibility away from the various trends that come and go. (bearded hipster take note!) One of the founding residents of NYC's famed APT, Duane has played at pretty much every significant NY spot high and low for the past 15 years. One of the leading producers and remixers in contemporary dance music, Cambridge raised Ray Mang, (Raj Gupta) hardly needs an intro. Under the name Ray Mang, (also under Laj, Sir Raymond Mang, Block 16, & Motif) he has written and recorded tracks with people like Jon Lucien, Bim Sherman, Jhelisa, Kier Kerby, Robert Owens and Mozez. He has also remixed tracks for disco heroes like Roxy Music, Banda Black Rio, Terry Callier, Freddie Mercury, Beck, Shirley Bassey, Bryan Ferry and Grace Jones amongst others. You can find his remixes and original material on labels like Bearfunk, DFA, Eskimo, Under the Shade, Noid, and his own Mangled label. Raj is a busy man with tons of stuff coming out, so we are very happy he made time for this great set. Synth ambassadors Birdsnake create their own brand of psychedelic infused downtempo electronica, exploring the line between digital and organic. A free-flowing sensory experience, the band seamlessly combines acid jazz, droney textures and dubbed out rhythms. New single ‘Hydrostatic Pressure’ shares familial qualities with previous release ‘Rare Amulet’ that feel aquatic in sound, yet are contrasted with a dance floor focused tempo and darker instrumentation. Hydrostatic Pressure is released on Thursday 28th August, and is the second single taken from the band’s debut album ‘Biofilter’, slated for release on Friday 14th November via Bathtub Music.

Shimmering chimes and pads of wind-like synthesisers slowly build to a cascade of bubbling percussion and flutters of flute. Charging four-to-the-floor kick drum bursts through, with shuddering sound effects intermingled with deep horn-like accents, bringing to mind giant rolling sea vessels. Far away kalimba and metallic bells drift in and out like tides, yet we are constantly being pulled back to the dance floor. Of the track the band reflects, “Hydrostatic pressure is a journey into the depths of the ocean, capturing the energy from more boisterous live jams but also reflecting our home studio production sound.” Having met at music school, Birdsnake formed when after class jams became a regular occurrence. This improvised and relaxed sharing of ideas forms the basis of all of Birdsnake’s tracks, and the forthcoming album Biofilter builds on this chemistry. Aquatic in theme and sounds, the new album aims to leave listeners feeling relaxed and energised in equal measures.

Mix of the Week #607: Darklord - Il Suono Scuro VII

Christopher Tubbs has been releasing music for nearly 25 years now... Both as Antlantic Conveyor and under his own Tubbs name and in recent years he's linked with Eden Burns as Burns and Tubbs on Public Possession to release music that is just nailing it. It's awlays really well produced and has a perfect mix of club groove and melodic hooks to drive the music along. He's also been a DJ for as long as I can remember... So to the mix... All you need to know is it has A Guy Called Gerald's 'I Won't Give In' on it which is one of the finest records known to man... It also moves through lovely balearic stuff into more clubby moments... A very enjoyable ride.
