Exist no.18 brings two very special UK artists - Steevio & Duckett

Steevio is a live electronic musician who runs the Freerotation Electronic Music Festival, Mindtours record label, and Freerotation record label with his partner Suzybee. Steevio specialises in live improvisations on an analogue modular synthesizer, and records everything as one off tracks in real time. He also performs live as part of AV duo Steevio & Suzybee in clubs and festivals worldwide.

Duckett is a producer and performer from Wales and a core resident of the renowned festival Freerotation. Releasing on labels including Until My Heart Stops, Freerotation, Wisdom Teeth, Greta Cottage Workshop, Galdoors, Bercuise Heroique, etc his music is difficult to pin down but sits somewhere on the edge of house, techno, ambient and experimental.

He hosts a monthly show on Mutant Radio and is about to launch his own label /platform. Highlights worth checking are his Boiler Room live studio sets and Hessle Audio radio guest appearances.

Steevio's DJ set consists of all his own darker techno and broken techno tunes, mostly vinyl releases, a couple of digital only releases, and a recently recorded live jam. Much of this material hasn’t been used in his mixes before.

Ducketts mix consists of entirely exclusive material comprising some upcoming releases and more predominantly includes some exploratory live studio jams at 90bpm.  All fresh material.

Exist Palestine brings forward the highly talented local artists and the brightest musical visionaries in the global electronic music scene. Exist seeks to build bridges between international artists, Palestinian sound innovators, the many that have been displaced, and musicians who are unable to attend the festival due to politically set testrictions. The lineups consist of artists who participated in Exist Festival 2019 as well as the ones who will be invited to play the next editions.

Function lays down the Sandwell District style on this week's RA podcast.

Over the space of the last four years, Sandwell District have managed to carve out a place in the hearts of techno fans worldwide with their austere minimalist sound aesthetic. The label was actually founded by Birmingham-based Peter Sutton (AKA Female) back in 2002, but lay stagnant until it was revitalised with two releases from Sutton three years later. It has since developed into an international effort, with the Sandwell artist roster sharing the label managing responsibilities.

One member of their American wing is David Sumner (AKA Function), who got his first break via a trio of techno twelves for Damon Wild's Synewave imprint. Sumner then went on to launch his own label under the Infrastructure banner, releasing a flurry of his own material before getting in contact with Sutton's Downwards bedfellows Regis and Ian J. Richardson to sign some of their tracks. Their relationship has since grown, with Sumner becoming a fully-fledged member of their techno alliance and using it as a platform for his claustrophobic Sähkö-esque minimalism and bleakly hypnotic warehouse techno. For this RA podcast, Regis and Sumner picked the tracks, while Sumner did the mixing, and, as you might expect, it's a journey deep into the world of techno.

What have you been working on recently?

Finishing up a new Function 12-inch that will form the basis of an album and John's finishing a new Silent Servant 12-inch. Regis has been working with Ancient Methods on a 12-inch for DN.

Where and how was the mix recorded?

It was recorded at our studio in Berlin, Regis and I decided on the records together but it then made more sense to just have me do the physical mix. I had set up a chain that included Ableton, turntables, hardware and effects.

Can you tell us a little about the idea behind the mix?

I think the idea was to somehow represent what we have been doing live/out over the past year (this was a challenge to do in one hour as we play between three and five hours as a rule). From the outset it was about creating tension.

Sandwell District seems to have its basis in a lineage of anonymous techno production. Yet you consent to interviews, do podcasts, etc. How do you walk that tightrope effectively?

I think that's maybe a misconception as artist names do appear on the label. People may come to that conclusion due to operational methods we sometimes employ, as an example, artist names are sometimes added onto a release a few months after it has come out (no doubt due to indecision at the time or some internal squabble). The N/A thing was an experiment in human nature .... probably.

You recently played the Labyrinth Festival for the first time. Can you talk a little bit about the experience?

Regis and Silent Servant have a reputed love for post-punk. Are you also listening to quite a bit of rock music, or is it all techno?

From Sonic Youth to Rob Hood, Einsturzende Neubauten to U.R and The Jesus and Mary Chain to Mr. Fingers there is a connection that makes perfect sense to everyone involved with this so-called label.

What are you up to next?

A Function longplayer, a Sandwell collective album project, a limited Sandwell Mix CD, a remix package of Function tracks featuring mixes from Ben Klock, Norman Nodge and CH-Signal Laboratories and a collaboration with Jerome Sydenham, among a number of other projects.

Menou / iwamaki is a Japan-based DJ and live performer specialising in Drone & Ambient Techno. Since starting her DJ career in 2015, she has performed at some of Japan's most iconic venues, including Contact Tokyo, VENT Tokyo, sound space α, Kagurane, and Soup. In 2017, she took the stage at the legendary Dommune, further establishing herself in the underground scene.

In 2019, Menou expanded her craft, introducing her live sets, which feature a distinct approach to sound layering. Her live performances have earned her international recognition, including appearances at Mostra Festival in Barcelona (April 2023).

Menou's DJ and live performances offer a deep, immersive journey through drone soundscapes, where subtle, evolving layers of sound create a rich, atmospheric experience. Her goal is to invite listeners into a meditative state, where they can appreciate the nuanced shifts and textures that define her sound.

Erika dreams on the cellular level, or perhaps of transdimensional intelligences moving through strange patterns on celestial objects, working towards a mysterious goal. Her connection to the dreamworld becomes concrete in her approach to music, simultaneously so solid and yet so ethereal. Erika still finds time to accomplish many things in her waking hours, such as being a member of Ectomorph, co-conspirator of Detroit's Interdimensional Transmissions record label, DJing with vinyl, making music with her pet machines, and running erika.net - a freeform streaming radio station. Erika.net celebrates its 13th year this year, being one of the very first iTunes presets. From 1993 through 1999, Erika was very involved in WCBN in Ann Arbor, as a freeform and jazz DJ, and Program Director.
The daughter of a famed scientist and already running a well known BBS from her bedroom by the time she was 13, Erika is no stranger to expressing her ideas through technology. In 1997 she was handed a TR-606 and asked to join Ectomorph, and has since become an electronic musician of the highest order, focusing on analog synthesis, with live hardware sequencing that allows transformation over time and a deep depth of tone.
