Folks, it's hard to contain the excitement we have to be able to sit down with one of our personal favorites and veterans in the game the one and only Jessica "Fortune" Fenner based out of Milwaukee, WI for this second episode of House Talk & Pallet Jazz.

We uncover some of the most mind-blowing stories and experiences of her life that you would never believe as we sat here trying to keep our mouth from hitting the floor time after time but WOW!

A dedicated force in the midwest music industry, with over 20 years DJing, coordinating electronic music events, promoting, talent buying, mentoring, and most recently launching an agency under her company, Apart. Fortune is widely recognized and respected as a key player through out the region.

Growing up in England, her favorite moments were epic family parties with live music, dancing and 200 or so happy people. Playing multiple instruments, early years were also influenced by local Bristol artists like Massive Attack and Roni Size. Then rave culture erupted. Steve Silk Hurley’s Jack Your Body was the #1 selling record in the country, The Prodigy and Carl Cox became household names, and she was hooked. By 16 she was involved with rave promoters Transition.

At 19 Fortune landed in California with $140 and a suitcase. No dance music, “The Chronic” bumped out of cars and clubs, East battled West and she embraced her hip-hop education. Returning to UK a year later a new genre was sweeping the nation – jungle. She absorbed DJs blowing up the clubs: Grooverider, Sasha, LTJ Bukem.

Six months on she arrived in Milwaukee. A fixture in the emerging club scene, she took up djing, quickly landing underground hip-hop residencies and developed a style that includes her house, techno and broken beat influences. Fortune played noted establishments across the States, including San Francisco’s  The EndUp; Detroit’s TV Lounge; Minneapolis’s First Ave, and is a regular at Chicago’s legendary Smart Bar. She’s played the Canary Islands, Spain, and headlined in the city that influenced her so much, Bristol. Festivals include multiple appearances at Spring Awakening, Summerfest, Even Furthur, Wavefront and Winter Warmer. 

A testament to her range, she’s been booked as direct support for a diverse array of top tier artists, notably Adam X, Audiojack, Claude VonStroke, Colette, Cassy, Catz & Dogz, Danny Daze, Derrick Carter, Gaiser, Gene Farris, Green Velvet, Honey Dijon, J.Phlip, Joey Beltram, Justin Martin, Kate Simko, Kaskade, Kenny Glasgow, Kid Sister, KiNK, Kool Keith, Lahrs Behernroth, LP Giobbi, Pan Pot, Superjane, Will Clarke.

By ’09 recession had shut down Milwaukee music. Determined to keep house and techno present, Fortune shifted focus to her promotions company, producing non-stop events, the only area woman to make independent electronic music promotions a full time profession. Discontent with skewed industry dynamics, she implemented the Apart internship, produced panels and workshops to foster visibility and equity, transitioned Apart Artists from collective to an agency representing 14 diversely talented djs/producers, and is a vocal advocate for increased safety in the WI music space. 

Fortune’s mission: Facilitate well being through music, whether as a dj, promoter, mentor or agent.

This is Duck Trash’s set from Tomorrow’s Fires, a party celebrating the release of Erika’s “Anevite Void” album on February 25, 2023. Mix theme: After getting abducted by aliens, one must learn how to adapt & grow plants on an unfamiliar planet in outer space.

It’s hard to overstate the transformative power of the American Underground. Things get lost when it’s just a systematic big business, all these special things that make the core essence so powerful and palpable. IT first encountered @ducktrash when BMG played for them in Indianapolis last September with Noncompliant at this exquisite dive bar called State Street Club with the most open minded crowd. It wasn’t what it looked like, it really transcended time and space. “Duck Trash is a queer techno & electro selector who believes in the healing power of the dance floor.” We couldn’t agree more, and we’re so glad they got to do their Detroit debut at Erika’s album release party. They are part of the fabric that makes the midwest so amazing, the true underground freaks.

AZA (DJ/ Producer and label owner) a self-taught artist born in California, is proving to be a standout component within the next generation of rising Techno artists in North America currently based in the Midwest. 

Tapped to perform throughout the United States where she has shared stages with artists such as Green Velvet, Alan Oldham aka DJ T-1000, Stacey Pullen, Gene Farris, Hannah Wants, The Yellowheads and more.
She has released on some of the  most authentic independent labels the circuit has to offer.

 AZA draws an influence from a diverse collection of sound ranging from Classical music to her Carribean music roots. Growing up on the traditional sounds of her heritage and singing in operas in San Francisco since the age of 12 fused her unique sound. 

Later in life she fell in love with techno music whenn she attended her first Movement festival in Detroit, Michigan. AZA is well known regionally, in the Midwest region of the US for being a dynamic selector in House and Techno music. She is constantly on the move sharing her electrifying energy behind the decks with audiences across the region.

Some of AZA’s following have quoted her sets as  being“soul moving”. This is exactly her intention. Her goal is to spread love through music across the globe for the rest of her existence on the planet! She is just getting started. 

Currently, she is in the studio working on an EP that will be released on her own imprint Soundbeing Recordings ® this summer.  You will find AZA playing at coveted and well known midwestern venues such as The Leland Club in Detroit, TV Lounge, and Primary Club in Chicago.

From that moment on AZA has been even more inspired to continue in her craft of DJing and Producing! She has much more in store for her audiences.

This 6AM Guest Mix was mixed at AZA’s home studio in Northern Kentucky on professional decks facing the private woods surrounding her home.

Even while surrounded by nature she imagined a crowded
warehouse dance floor at peak hours in front of her while 
mixing. This mix is for the dance floor. It is hypnotic , raw and full of surprises! A perfect mix to get you up and moving.
