This is my 1st EP of ambient music.

In music school in the mid 90’s a typical day could be practicing 6 to 8 hours, 2 to 3 ensemble classes, and a composition and theory class. Music, music, music. But then there was a time in almost every day where one had to hit the books, and it was during these times that I craved some music that was interesting, provided depth of composition, yet not written in such a way as to pull your mind and attention away from studying. This being the day and age before all of the modern music streaming options, it was considerably more difficult to discover music like this. However, I found the perfect record for this my sophomore year. Bill Frisell’s debut record on ECM called ‘In Line.’ 

That record was the genesis for this EP. I wished to explore creating moods through the use of harmonic ambivalence, and a lack of specific melodic statements. Although ‘In Line’ by Frisell has definitive melodic statements and song form, I did not want you to walk away humming my melody. I would hope that you could sing your own in the spaces I left in this collection.

The creation of these songs was really a process of subtraction. Anyone who has a computer and a basic music composition program (DAW) knows that the amount of sounds offered from the multitude of software synths, samplers, loop programs, and of course your own physical collection of instruments can be paralyzing. It reminds me of an article I read in the NY Times many years ago with the headline “The Paralyzing Problems of Too Many Choices”, and this same theme was in a book I read recently on the grocery store business. When you need some hot sauce, you are now confronted with over 40 different choices, it becomes the tyranny of choice. 

I have started and left unfinished hundreds of compositions in the last 15 years, and the reason why was the tyranny of choice. I would get a great idea down, then spend the next 3 hours testing different synth patches that would work, then when a patch was found, I would spend more time messing with different EQ’s then compressors, then reverbs, then delay’s, and hey why not send this through an amp simulator, use a mic simulator and throw a ribbon mic off-axis and then throw it through a leslie speaker emulator…5 hours later I am burnt out go to bed and never return to the composition.  

For this project I limited myself to a ‘relatively’ small set of sounds, used 1 reverb, and stayed away from using EQ or compression for 95% of the tracks. I did not use a click track, I played the rhodes and piano parts live, did very small editing to the original performance, and only looped one part in ‘Kite’, the rhodes part, but I wanted this to be all live performance, nothing quantized to-the-grid to capture the imperfections in my playing, and to release me from the tyranny of choices.
