Most of you know that I have been producing instrumentals for 20+ years. If you don’t know, now ya know… Had the opportunity to work with some really creative folks in that time. Did work for films, tv shows, artists, etc.. and from time to time I work on solo projects like the one I’m releasing now. 

For context, I started this project in 2018 when all of a sudden I lost my self. More specifically, lost my sound and my identity with the music I create. At this time I had maybe a handful of beats. Then 2020 hit, COVID and all that mess. Best friends became strangers, estranged family members, and I went inward and set boundaries from everyone and everything that weren’t healthy for me. A self preservation act. 

From 2020 up til about the end of 2022 I was struggling to identify with the sound I wanted to create, lost but not entirely as I was still working on other projects with artists. 

This year, 2023, I went back to what made it all fun for me. My roots in all of this music stuff. Making beats that I loved to make back in the flourishing Bay Root Production days. Doing so helped me re-identify with the old nickname that everyone who knows me well calls me, Rey. That’s it. Simply Rey.. 

If you’re still reading.. this is certainly not a unique or profound story but more a stream of thought for how I arrived at Spells for the Curious. A creative self portrait of my journey the past 5 years. 

If you’re a fan of Bay Root Productions and it’s music, you’ll want to give this album a listen. Its a unique sounds that some work so hard to not identify with but at the center of the truth, it’s ingrained in my DNA and the harder I work to stray from it, the easier it is for me to find it.
