Frank & Genie Summers are the founders of Family Missions Company. They have served as Lay Catholic Evangelists proclaiming the Gospel and serving the poor across globe since 1975.  They and their missionaries have worked to proclaim Jesus, His Gospel, and to serve the poor in the USA, Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Oceania; amounting to over 47 countries.

Frank has been a featured speaker at conferences, retreats, and Catholic events at home and abroad and was honored with the Diocese of Lafayette’s Medal for The Bishop’s Service Award. Over the years, Genie’s conference and retreat ministry has reached International and National venues – including the Women’s Conference at Franciscan University, CCRNO, Eucharistic Conferences, Clergy and Religious Community Retreats. 

Genie’s novel, Go! You Are Sent, volume one of the testimony of their faith journey, has reached thousands with their story of miracles and faith. Volume two, Our Family’s Book of Acts, has been distributed in Asia and has a new reprint with pictures in the USA.

Frank and Genie enjoy speaking on: evangelization, foreign missions,  family life, the Holy Spirit, Life in the Spirit seminar, holiness, social justice, lay apostolate,  basic ecclesial community, prayer and Bible reading, and living the scriptures. The Summers have seven children, nineteen grandchildren, and an ever-growing missionary family filling their lives with happiness and holiness.

June 25th, 2014(Lagos, Nigeria): 'Miracle-Worker'(The Yahweh reprise) was given to me, as I prayed in my 'Jugsy-Nduks' room. I lay face-down on the floor because my knees could not bear the weight of my agony that day. This lasted for approximately 8 minutes and 3 seconds. At the very same moment, my 2 year-old niece was fighting for her life in an Intensive Care Unit in the USA. Doctors were trying to revive her through Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Soon after, she slipped into a coma and was in that state for a few weeks. In between the last full-stop and this next sentence, it is best left to the imagination what a harrowing time that my family had to endure during that period.

I sang this song every-day because I could not find the words to pray.

I promised heaven that I would record and release the song as soon as my niece left the hospital. Promise kept. Here you have it!

Interestingly, my fellow stake-holders in the process (Wilson Joel and Nathaniel Bassey) were also going through several near-similar encounters. For WJ, he also had a family member in hospital. For NB, anytime he turned on the TV etc., all he heard was a confirmation of the lyrics of this song.

Today, Fefe (pronounced Fay-fay) is the effervescent joy-ball as she has always been! Her laughter peals like bells ringing. It is almost surreal to believe the awesome transformation. From down and out, to up and about! A few weeks ago, I visited her and when I I sang her 'Miracle-working God' song to her, the smile she gave me was worth more than a million rainbows!

Who would have known that such a trial would birth such a triumph? YAHWEH!

This weekend is Saturday the 5th and Sunday 6th of March, beginning the fourth week of Lent. 

I am not alone as I sit here, trying to pray.
Christ is present in these people around me.
Christ is here at my side, waiting for me,
ready to enter into my life, waiting for my invitation.
So, let me begin my prayer by acknowledging his presence, and inviting him in.

Over the course of this week, our readings have centred around the role of the prophets in history; not only on the messages they had for people, but on their own relationships with God and the difficulties they faced, particularly in their hometowns. Hearing these readings can be both challenging and encouraging to us. This weekend’s reading from the Gospel of Luke brings that same challenge and encouragement, through Jesus reminding the crowds of the Prophet Jonah’s work in Nineveh. 

If there had been tabloids back in those days, the commuters into Nineveh would've been reading ‘Crazy prophet has Nineveh in uproar: Smart foreign royal starts eighth week at Solomon’s palace’.  The people Jesus mentions here were the A-list celebrities of their generation.  What attitude do I have to the royals and celebrities who take up so much space in the media today?  Am I fascinated by them?  jealous?  scornful?

What has Jesus got that these celebrities haven't?  What does he offer me that they don't?

As I listen to the reading again, can I hear Jesus asking for a little space?

How do I want to respond, today, to these words of Jesus?   Do I need to recognise him for who he is?   Do I need to make more space for him in my life?   Whatever it is I want to say to him, I can say it, right now.

Professor Rhythm’s 1991 recording Professor 3 is a vivid reflection of urban South Africa as apartheid was ending. Thami Mdluli’s production project had young and old dancing to a sound that sought to unite Blacks within Southern Africa. “Our music gave hope to the hopeless,” he says. 

Professor Rhythm’s third instrumental album (which contains some background vocals, to be exact), portrays the moment when the dominant mbaqanga and American R&B-based bubblegum sounds being produced in Johannesburg and other urban centers were transforming into house and hip-hop-inspired kwaito. The pop of the 80’s and all that went with it—from the models of synths and drum machines to the lyrical style—gave way to a changing melodic emphasis and new, much slower tempi using a completely different rhythmic skeleton. Upbeat, chipper bubblegum, often with double-time breakdowns and upstroke syncopations, faded and the sounds began to more closely resemble those of contemporary Black America—where hip-hop was slowing down and the bass-lines and melodies were getting moodier, darker in general. At the same time house music had briefly reached mainstream acceptance in the States and that popularity continued to feed into awareness overseas. These two influences blended with the burgeoning house music scenes in Johannesburg and Pretoria as Professor Rhythm 3 was being produced in March 1991 (the same year apartheid ended). Mdluli explains, “We were Influenced by foreign bands and so people updated their sound.”

According to Mdluli, the evolving sound was bolstered by widening availability of house and rap records from abroad while, most importantly, an increasing sense that apartheid might soon be finished was met with a new positivity vibe society. “1991, ’92, ’93… Mandela was released. People were upbeat, they were happy, the music was good.”

Professor 3 came out on vinyl as the LP business was dying in South Africa and sold around 20,000 copies. It was mainly distributed on tape, which sold closer to 100,000. With the help of engineer Fab Rosso, the recording features backing vocalists from Mango Groove.

After making a half-dozen records as Professor Rhythm, Mdluli once again shifted his focus musically. By the mid-90’s he had veered off gospel music—and left playing in bands and started making his own solo recordings. His enormous success in the gospel realm in the years since is a remarkable story in its own right, but for now we are only dancing.
